The Hills: Heidi Montag Files For Legal Separation From Husband, Spencer Pratt

In an attempt to prove that her split from husband, Spencer Pratt, is more than merely a publicity stunt, Heidi Montag filed papers for a legal separation this week. Although the timing of the breakup coincides perfectly with the end of their reality show, MTV‘s The Hills, Montag insists that the separation is legit, despite the skepticism of her co-stars. It’s been a little over a week since Heidi Montag’s rep confirmed rumors of a separation between Montag and her reality TV husband, Spencer Pratt. As their reality show MTV‘s The Hills comes to an end, many have speculated that the split is nothing more than a publicity stunt, but Montag hopes to put those rumors to rest. This week she filed for legal separation from her husband at a Santa Monica courthouse. The paperwork lists irreconcilable differences as the reason for the break.
Legal separation is very different than filing for divorce. The separation papers simply allow Heidi Montag to keep her personal earnings separate from Pratt. The official separation date listed on papers is June 8, 2010. When reports first surfaced that Montag had moved out of the home she shares with Pratt (as seen on MTV‘s The Hills), she said, “There are so many lies out there about me and I just needed space – even away from my husband.” Montag hopes to “concentrate on herself” in her new home, rooming with Jen Bunney (formerly a guest star on The Hills). The two have plans to film a new reality show.
Despite the recent legal action, Montag and Pratt’s co-stars on The Hills question the validity of their separation. “I think it’s a joke,” co-star Audrina Patridge says. “I don’t believe it. They’re inseparable and in love.” Lo Bosworth agrees, saying ”I don’t buy it. I’ve worked with them for too long, and they haven’t been filming, so I think this is a way they think they can get back on the show for the last few episodes.”
