American Idol: Ellen DeGeneres Returning Next Season, Plans To Be A ‘Tougher’ Judge

June 11, 2010 01:00 PM by Nancy Floyd

Simon Cowell will be noticeably absent on season 10 of American Idol, but one judge definitely plans to return to her seat on the judging panel: Ellen DeGeneres. The comedienne and daytime TV talk show host says she will be returning next season with a tougher approach. Keep reading for more details on how DeGeneres hopes to be different to the contestants…

Ellen DeGeneres has officially made it through her first season as an American Idol judge. The comedienne enjoyed her time on the judging panel, although it took her awhile to find her footing. “Your first year anywhere is going to be tough, because you’re trying to figure out what your role is,” DeGeneres says.

Now that her first year is over, Ellen DeGeneres looks forward to her second. She plans to change things up a bit during season 10 of American Idol and take a tad different approach with the aspiring singers. “I think next year my role will be to be exactly who I am, sometimes funny and sometimes serious, and I think I’ll probably learn to be a little harder on people without being rude. But I think it was a fine line for me to walk this year,” DeGeneres told USA Today.

In addition to DeGeneres’ new approach to judging, American Idol will also be undergoing another major change in season 10: the loss of longtime judge, Simon Cowell. Despite rumors that the two stars were at odds all season, DeGeneres admits that she’ll miss the acerbic Brit.  “No one can replace Simon, just like I wasn’t replacing Paula [Abdul],” she said.
