On Monday night, viewers of ABC‘s The Bachelorette watched the cringe-inducing one-on-one date between Ali Fedotowsky and ukulele-playing, Hunter. After repeatedly calling her ‘baby’ and ‘darling,’ he finally went in for the kiss…on her shoulder. It wasn’t too surprising to fans that Ali didn’t give him a rose after the awkward encounter. Apparently, Hunter wasn’t too shocked either. Keep reading to hear his side of the story and how “awkward” the date really was…

Hunter charmed Ali Fedotowsky with his clever and comical ukulele-song on the first night of ABC‘s The Bachelorette, but their one-on-one date this week proved that there just wasn’t any romantic chemistry between the two. Hunter seemed to be really into the date–calling Ali pet names and trying to move in for a kiss–while Ali seemed to be feeling nothing but discomfort. With a little time to reflect, Hunter acknowledges the awkwardness between the two and thinks it was time for him to go.

“It was less awkward than how it was shown, but it was still awkward,” Hunter says of his date with The Bachelorette. “I don’t think there was any romantic spark at all, and that’s kind of what it was in the end. You could tell between both of us when we realized that, at least for that night, there wasn’t anything there.”

Hunter also adds that he wasn’t too heartbroken to be eliminated from ABC‘s The Bachelorette. ”When I left I was definitely happy to get back home. It was something where I was pumped to be there, but when it was done I was relieved as well,” Hunter says. ”Would things have changed between Ali and I if I had more time? That I really don’t know. I might have just kept on shutting down more and more.”

Hunter also agrees with former Bachelorette star, DeAnna Pappas’ theory that Ali Fedotowsky might not have selected anyone in the end. ”If she didn’t find the person that she saw herself with for the rest of her life then I would see her not picking anyone,” he says. “She let me go because she didn’t see anything there. I could see her doing the same thing with the guys, even it was down to the final two.”
