American Idol: Will Harry Connick Jr. Replace Simon Cowell?

June 14, 2010 11:00 AM by Nancy Floyd

Simon Cowell is officially done with his judging duties on American Idol and everyone’s dying to know who will replace him. The acerbic Brit is leaving Idol behind to focus on the launch of his new reality competition, X Factor, and rumors have been flying for months about who his replacement will be. Although FOX has yet to announce his successor, one recent guest mentor is looking like a shoo-in for the position: Harry Connick, Jr. Keep reading for more details about Cowell’s possible replacement…

Howard Stern, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx. Bret Michaels. These are just a few of the celebrities whose names have been tossed around as possible replacements for American Idol judge Simon Cowell. FOX issued a statement that Cowell’s successor would be announced sometime after the American Idol finale on May 26th, but no word has been released yet.

Since his stint as a celebrity mentor earlier this season, Harry Connick Jr. has garnered quite the following. He impressed contestants and fans when he served as a mentor for Frank Sinatra week this season on American Idol, enough that people have begun discussing what an asset he’d be to the show.

Although there are no official reports of American Idol producers approaching Connick, the crooner says he’d certainly be open to the idea of filling Simon Cowell‘s seat on the judging panel. “I’d consider it, but they haven’t asked me,” Connick says. He thinks that a musician should replace Cowell because of their personal experience. ”He was amazing on that show but I also think he’s not a musician, and when you don’t have a musical background, you have to resort to different ways to get your point across,” Connick told Contact Music. “He can’t say, ‘You’re singing out of tune’, when he may not know if you’re singing out of tune.”

This season’s crop of American Idol contestants had nothing but praise for Connick when he mentored Frank Sinatra week. American Idol champ, Lee Dewyze loved that “he was just so involved in every part of it” and Aaron Kelly thinks Connick “would be a great replacement for Simon.”

And it seems that Connick also has a fellow American Idol judge rooting for him to take Simon Cowell‘s seat. Kara DioGuardi recently said, ”I’ve voiced who I think would be pretty good. They know that I thought Harry Connick [Jr.] did a really good job. He really helped those contestants and he obviously cared a lot – he sat and did all those arrangements. He’s funny, Ellen [DeGeneres] and Harry are close friends, so that would be a good chemistry.”
