Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, the top 11 contestants from season 7 hit the stage for the first night of competition. The votes are in and on tonight’s results show, one dancer will be eliminated from the competition. But first, there’s a performance by Usher and the world premiere of Justin Bieber’s new music video. Keep reading for all the details on tonight’s show…
Tonight’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance starts off with a group jazz routine choreographed by SYTYCD newbie, Tessandra Chavez. After Cat Deeley introduces the judges, Nigel Lythgoe takes the opportunity to announce that July 31 is going to be National Dance Day. Um, does being executive producer of So You Think You Can Dance give you the authority to just make up random holidays? Apparently it does. In that case, I vote for National Ice Cream Day and National Stay-In-Your-Pajamas-All-Day-And-Eat-Pancakes Day. See what you can do, Nigel. Choreographers Tabitha & Napoleon have bought into the madness and created a routine for all of America to learn for National Dance Day. Excellent! I’ve always wanted to be a part of a totally random, but fully choreographed dance sequence at the most unexpected time and place just like in all my favorite teenybopper movies. My dream is becoming a reality! Thanks NappyTab! Happy National Dance Day. Look for my card in the mail.
It’s time for Cat Deely to deliver the voting results from last night’s episode to the first four dancers. Ballet dancer Alex Wong is up first. Last night, Mia Michaels told Alex that his dance was the greatest routine in the history of So You Think You Can Dance. I’m guessing he’s gonna be safe. And would you look at that? He is. Next up, contemporary dancer Robert who the judges raved about. Also safe. Contemporary dancers Lauren and Kent are facing Cat next. After a major dramatic pause, they learn they’re both safe. Screams! Cheers! Pirouettes! Uncontrollable sobbing!
The next four So You Think You Can Dance hopefuls face Cat Deeley for the results. Tap dancer Melinda’s jive with Pasha wasn’t enough to get America to cast votes and she is the first contestant in the bottom three. Probably because Pasha didn’t take his shirt off. I’m just saying. Contemporary dancer Billy Bell, wearing skintight red pants and ultra-low tank top, is pleased to find out he’s safe. I’m pleased to find out I don’t have to watch him dance in that ridiculous outfit. It’s down to two contemporary dancers, Alexie and Ashley. Alexie’s “cute” hip-hop routine with Twitch didn’t please the viewers and she’s sent to the bottom three, which means Ashley is safe.
Will the final spot in the bottom three go to B-boy Jose, contemporary dancer Adechike, or salsa dancer Cristina? Jose’s hip-hop routine with Comfort was enough to secure him safety for another week. Adechike is also safe, meaning Cristina is in the bottom three. Three ladies in the bottom three? Guess that proves who makes up the voting pool…12-year old girls who have crushes on Billy Bell and Kent Boyd.
Next it’s time for a performance from the Broadway show Come Fly With Me, choreographed by Twila Tharpe. The two dancers basically rough each other up all across the stage to a Frank Sinatra song. Following the routine, it’s time for Melinda, Alexie, and Cristina to dance for their lives to prove they deserve a spot in the competition. Literally, they’re dancing for their lives. One misstep and they’re pulled offstage and shot. Predictably, tap dancer Melinda does a tap routine, contemporary dancer Alexie does a contemporary solo, and salsa dancer Cristina shakes her hips and snaps her head around.
While the judges deliberate about which dancer will be eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance tonight, Usher takes the stage to perform his #1 single, OMG. Usher has a song called OMG?! Did he suddenly morph into a 12-year old girl? What’s his follow-up song going to be called? LOL? Or maybe it’ll just be an emoticon. Oh well, at least Usher can dance which is more than I can say for most pop stars that grace the So You Think You Can Dance stage.
Since the crowd is made up of 12-year old girls, they love Usher’s performance. In an effort to make their heads explode, Usher unveils the brand new, never-before-seen video for Justin Bieber’s single, Somebody to Love, featuring none other than Usher himself. Knowing Usher, the song is probably called Somebody 2 Love. 4-ever. Considering what mega stars Justin Bieber and Usher are, this video looks like it was thrown together in an afternoon and filmed on someone’s cell phone. Why does Justin Bieber need someone to love anyways? He’s, like, 8 years old. What he needs is someone to babysit him. I kid, I kid.
Once the tweenfest is over, it’s time for Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, and Adam Shankman to deliver their verdict. The judges are unanimous in their decision about which dancer will be eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance. Someone didn’t dance for their life quite strongly enough. Contemporary dancer Alexie is the first dancer being sent home on season seven. Off with her head!
