On Wednesday night’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance, Alex Wong blew the judges away with his first performance of the season. Along with All-Star Allison Holker, Alex perfectly executed a contemporary number choreographed by Sonja Tayeh and won rave reviews from Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, and Adam Shankman. Michaels even went so far as to call the routine the greatest in the history of the show. Keep reading for more details on how Wong felt about the piece…
Alex Wong started season seven of So You Think You Can Dance off with a bang. During his first competitive performance, the ballet dancer won outstanding praise from all three judges, Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, and Adam Shankman. “I just did my best,†Wong told People magazine after his performance. “The judges have been saying they want to see more performance and more personality from me, so I just tried my best.â€
After Alex Wong and Allison Holker completed the moving Sonja Tayeh-choreographed routine (to Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah), So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley said the performance gave her the first chills of the season. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe congratulated Alex on setting a new standard for the show and Mia Michaels said the routine was the greatest in the history of So You Think You Can Dance.
Wong credits his All-Star partner, Allison Holker, a So You Think You Can Dance alum from season two, for pulling out the best in him. “She’s such an amazing dancer and she gives so much so while I was working with her, she was able to pull that from me,†he said. “When I see my partner do that it just pulls me right in. That’s what made it so amazing.â€
