While the world converges in South Africa for the month-long World Cup games, Survivor: Africa winner Ethan Zohn and his girlfriend, Survivor: Amazon winner Jenna Morasca are educating local children about HIV and AIDS. Zohn’s nonprofit organization, Grassroots Soccer, is teaming up with (RED) to hold educational and athletic programs for children across South Africa to bring awareness about the diseases. Keep reading for more details on what a difference Zohn and Morasca are making…
Ethan Zohn, winner of Survivor: Africa, and his girlfriend, Jenna Morasca, winner of Survivor: Amazon, are impacting the lives of thousands of South African children through soccer. Zohn’s nonprofit organization, Grassroots Soccer, is partnering with (RED) to hold Holiday Skillz Programs for 5,500 children in South Africa over the next month. The programs are designed to educate children about HIV and AIDS and making wise decisions in life.
“We’re here for the World Cup and we’re using the power of soccer to fight against AIDS,” Zohn says. “We give kids the knowledge, skills, and support to live HIV free.”
Zohn’s girlfriend, Jenna Morasca, has been moved to see the excitement and participation of South African children in the Holiday Skillz Programs. “It’s amazing to see the kids learning about HIV all through soccer and sports,” she says.
Zohn hopes that his organization Grassroots Soccer can make a lasting impact on children and families in South Africa. “I’m not sure if everyone realizes the magnitude of this situation,” the Survivor star says. “In the same month that the World Cup takes place, nearly 23,000 South Africans will die from AIDS. And the crazy thing is, AIDS is a preventable and treatable disease. People are dying of a preventable disease. This is not OK.” Fortunately, through the work that Zohn and Morasca are doing with Grassroots Soccer and (RED), over 5,000 children are being educated.
“It’s incredible that (RED) is partnering with Grassroots Soccer to provide education for these kids to lead a healthy lifestyle and make right choices in life,” Zohn says.
