The top 9 finalists on So You Think You Can Dance take the stage tonight for some amazing and moving performances! In addition to dancing with their All-Star partners, each of the top 9 finalists will perform a solo in his/her own style, plus two guys partner up for an all-male hip hop routine. Keep reading for more details on tonight’s exciting new episode…
On tonight’s new episode of So You Think You Can Dance, the top 9 dancers take the stage and strut their stuff for the judges and the at-home viewers. As always, Adam Shankman, Mia Michaels, and Nigel Lythgoe are standing by on the judging panel to offer their expert advice and critiques. During a pre-taped clip from last week introduced by Cat Deeley, we learn the partnerships that will be happening this week including the unusual pairing of Alex and Twitch for an all-male hip hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon.
AdeChike is the first dancer to take the stage and he’ll be partnering with Lauren for a Dave Scott hip hop routine. AdeChike doesn’t seem to have any problems finding the chemistry with his crush, Lauren during their practices. The playful routine starts with both dancers dressed in geeky getups, but that ends when Lauren rips her shirt open to reveal a sequins bra. All three judges love AdeChike and Lauren’s performance, especially appreciating seeing a new side of AdeChike’s personality and spunk.
Next, Ashley and Ade will be performing a contemporary routine choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance newbie, Dee Caspary. The routine’s premise is that Ashley is unable to move on her own without Ade’s help and it’s brilliantly executed. Nigel Lythgoe thought it was “like pouring a beautiful glass of liquid to drink from” (translation: he liked it), Mia Michaels likened it to “a purple wind, a hurricane, and a summer breeze” (translation: she liked it), and Adam Shankman called Ashley “breathtaking.”
This week, each of the top 9 dancers will be performing a solo in their own style. Billy is up first and if you’ve ever seen this kid dance, you don’t need m to tell you that he kills it. The red stretchy jeans I could do without, but the boy can move like nobody’s business. How does his body bend like that?!
Robert barely escaped the bottom three last week and tonight he’s dancing to prove he deserves to keep his spot on So You Think You Can Dance. He’s joining Courtney for the second time this season in a Sonja Tayeh-choreographed jazz routine. Sonja is determined to show America how crazy they are for putting Robert in the bottom three last week with the edgy, unusual performance. I’m starting to feel like if I’ve seen one Sonja Tayeh routine, I’ve seen them all. The men are always wearing eyeliner, the dancers are always slinking across the stage, and someone is always holding one leg in the air while simultaneously jerking their arms back and forth. Tonight is nothing new, but all three judges are impressed and think the style suits Robert.
B-boy Jose is the next finalist to perfom his solo, doing some freaky breakdancing to James Brown. His trick-heavy routine is energetic, cool, and definitely showcases his talent. Plus, he’s adorable so that can’t hurt with the 12-year old girls doing all the voting.
After facing elimination the past two weeks, Melinda is hoping that her salsa routine tonight with Pasha might earn her some votes. That depends…will Pasha be shirtless? Melinda hopes her Colombian background will help her as she performs a routine choreographed by Fabian Sanchez. Right away, Melinda gets her dress tangled on her high heel and gets off to a rough, fumbling start. Even the typically-always-smooth Pasha looks like he’s having a difficult time with this one. Not surprisingly, the judges weren’t too impressed with Melinda and Pasha’s routine and question whether or not they made a mistake by not eliminating Melinda last week. It looks like they’ll probably have another chance tomorrow night.
Cutie pie Kent is the next dancer to perform his solo. I’m pretty sure this kid could sit there for the full 30 seconds and just smile and he’d still get enough votes to make it through to next week. As it turns out, he comes out shirtless and gives a heartfelt performance, complete with backflips, and the girls go wild. Following Kent, ballet dancer Alex takes the stage for his solo. The music selection is weird, but his moves don’t disappoint. This guy is one solid mass of dance muscle and he’s certainly not afraid to flex it onstage.
Lauren and all-star Neil are working together next on a Broadway routine choreographed by Joey Dowling. In the fun and flirty performance, Lauren plays a 1940′s actress appearing in paperboy Neil’s daydreams. Lauren has a bit of a wardrobe malfunction when she snaps one of the straps on her skimpy sequins bodysuit, but she manages to keep herself covered. Overall, the judges loved Lauren and Neil’s performance.
Contemporary dancer Ashley takes the stage for her solo, opting for an upbeat, high-energy routine that dominates the entire stage.
Next, Billy and Kathryn are performing an emotional contemporary routine choreographed by Stacey Tookey. The happy smiley dancers need to work on evoking anguish and sadness in the piece inspired by heartbreak. The two dancers put on their game faces and deliver a beautiful performance. The judges love Billy’s technical brilliance, but want more emotion and honesty from him onstage.
Robert’s solo is up next. His quirky and strong performance to Ray LaMontagne certainly showcases his talent, strength, and range. And the girls in the crowd don’t seem so upset about it either!
Breakdancer Jose is stepping out of his comfort zone once again, performing a Samba routine with Anya, choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance alum Dmitry Chaplin. Jose’s first foray into a partnering ballroom dance should prove interesting. If all else fails, maybe no one will notice his mistakes because they’ll be so focused on the see-through lace shirt he’s wearing. The addition of a mirror-top table adds a cool element to the spicy routine and I’m surprised to see that Jose doesn’t seem to be doing totally awful. Although the judges recognize that Jose isn’t the strongest dancer in the competition, they love his charisma and appeal.
Tap dancer Melinda is performing her solo next. She looks absolutely adorable in a flowy pink dress and headband and delivers what I think to be her best solo performance thus far. It’s cute and sweet, but definitely shows off her amazing talent. Why don’t people like this girl?
Kent is working with Allison next for a Mandy Moore contemporary routine. The routine (like every other routine he’s done thus far on this season of So You Think You Can Dance) requires Kent to be a man, a tough job for the barely legal, goofy, naive small town boy. Allison is strong and sexy in the routine, but Kent looks a bit like a kid playing dress up. The judges like Kent, but they worry that he’s getting sucked into the TV aspect of it all and trying to play to the audience too much, leaving his performance a little bit fake.
Contemporary dancer AdeChike takes the stage next for his solo. Strong, powerful, and moving. That pretty much sums it up. Contemporary dancer Lauren follows him with the final solo of the night. Sweet, pretty, and elegant. That pretty much sums it up.
The final performance of the night goes to Alex and All-Star Twitch dancing to a hip hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon. As a ballet dancer, Alex is having a hard time readjusting to the more relaxed style of hip hop. The crazy fast and super cool performance has Twitch in the role of therapist and Alex playing his patient. The crowd goes absolutely nuts for the routine which earns the guys a standing ovation from all three judges. Not surprisingly, the judges rave about the routine, giving major props to Alex, and Adam Shankman is even brought to tears. That would be slightly more significant if that guy didn’t turn the waterworks on every single episode.
