Top Chef: All American

June 30, 2010 08:03 PM by Lisa Princ

Tonight on Bravo, the contestants of Top Chef are put to two ultimate all American challenges: a pie from scratch and a picnic lunch! Which one of our chefs will have the grill skills needed to win this challenge? Will we see Angelo pull off yet another win, or will someone else step up to the plate? Keep reading for all the details!

For their all American quickfire challenge on Top Chef on Bravo, the chefs are greeted by Padma along with Johnny Iuzzini and Gail Simmons, who will both be starring in the upcoming series, Top Chef: Just Desserts. Since Johnny is a pastry chef, for this challenge the chefs will have to create a pie from scratch because after all there is nothing more American than a good pie! The winner of the challenge will receive immunity in the elimination challenge.

As the chefs get to work on their pies, Tracy is really struggling to make her blueberry crunch pie work, but when she takes it out of the oven it is not what she expected, so with little time remaining she decides to scrap it and start over. Her second pie, however did not come out any better and it showed as the judges were very disappointed in her pie. The top pies of the day were Stephen will his curried apple whiskey pie and Kelly with her dark chocolate and raspberry ganache tart. In the end though, the best pie was actually Kenny with his gourmet pie take on bananas foster. Needless to say, Kenny was thrilled that he finally got a win in over Angelo, especially after last week’s drama.

For the All American elimination challenge on Top Chef on Bravo, the chefs would be preparing picnic food on the grill outdoors for a bunch of hungry D.C. interns. Once again, Tracy struggled with this as she tried to create sausage that she did not have enough time for so she turned them into sausage sliders. The sliders did not go over well as the judges thought there was way too much fennel and they were too big and undercooked. Amanda, who was desperate to prove herself after last week decided to go with ribs, and it worked because the judges loved her dish.

With Jonathan Waxman as their guest judge, the judges tried all of the all American picnic foods and headed back to the judges table. The best dishes of the evening were Angelo’s Asian lettuce wrap, Amanda’s ribs, Ed’s grilled tuna sandwich, and Arnold’s lamb. Jonathan Waxman had the honor of choosing the winner since he is deemed the grill master and he chose Arnold as the winner of the elimination challenge!

The four worst dishes were Tracy with her sliders, Stephen will his undercooked bacon wrapped fish, Tim with his bland side dishes, and Kevin with his boring take on rice and beans. In the end, the judges decided that it was time for Tracy to pack her knives and hit the road! Best of luck Tracy! Be sure to tune in next week for another new episode of Top Chef on Bravo!
