With only three weeks of the competition underway, this season of So You Think You Can Dance is shaping up to be a man’s game. All three dancers eliminated thus far have been females, leaving only two ladies left in the competition to duke it out with the remaining six guys. So, what gives? Does the at-home audience hate women? So You Think You Can Dance judges, Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman, weigh in on why they think a male dancer will take home the victory…
Tap dancer  Melinda Sullivan was the latest casualty on So You Think You Can Dance, the third female to be eliminated from the competition thus far. With only eight dancers remaining, there are only two female dancers still in the running toward earning the title of America’s Favorite Dancer. As much as judges Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman like the remaining lady dancers (Ashley and Lauren), they fear that a male dancer will probably take the crown.
Adam Shankman and Nigel Lythgoe weigh in on why they think the female dancers just aren’t getting the votes. ”I don’t think America hates women,” Adam Shankman says. “Melinda is very strong and very beautiful. She taps to ballads. I don’t think little girls and moms are picking up the phone for her. [And] I don’t think it’s America: It’s the women hating on the women.”
Nigel Lythgoe thinks the votes have less to do with gender and more to do with personality. ”They’re being absolutely honest,” Nigel Lythgoe says about the voters. “I truly don’t think [America dislikes the girls]. I tweeted this, too. You’ve got to take into account charisma.”
Adam Shankman is rooting for the girls, saying, “I hope they stay.” But if they intend to remain in the competition, Adam Shankman has some advice for the ladies. ”Ashley needs to do more of the same, which is what she’s found: her vulnerability,” Adam Shankman says. “Lauren needs to do the same thing. They have to live in the music and the performance.”
At the end of the day though, Nigel Lythgoe thinks a boy will win this season of So You Think You Can Dance. ”The strong boys are far stronger than the strong girls,” Nigel Lythgoe tells E!. “Some of the weaker boys are far stronger in personality than any of the girls. When you have Jose smiling like that…they’re gonna steal hearts. You can never forget charisma is much more important than talent.”
