Emmy Award-winning choreographer, Mia Michaels, shocked and upset fans of So You Think You Can Dance last year when she announced that she wouldn’t be returning for season seven. Fortunately, things change and Mia Michaels reconsidered. These days, she’s not only choreographing for the dance competition, she’s also serving as a resident judge and “having a ball.” Keep reading for more details on why Mia Michaels decided to return and what she loves about the new format…

The routines that Mia Michaels has choreographed for So You Think You Can Dance have stood out as some of the best in the show’s history. Not only is she loved by the contestants and viewers of the show, she’s also received three Emmy nominations (and one win) for her work on the reality dance competition. When she announced last season that she wouldn’t be returning to the show, fans were shocked and disappointed. Fortunately for the viewers, she changed her mind and has returned as a resident judge, replacing ballroom pro Mary Murphy.

“Taking that break was really good for me,” Mia Michaels says about her brief decision to leave the show. “I was kind of able to deal with a bunch of different things in my life and then just coming back, sitting in that middle seat, I’m having a ball. We laugh more than anything and it’s fun.”

Besides being thrilled to serve as a resident judge, Mia Michaels is also really happy with the new format for season seven of So You Think You Can Dance, where contestants perform alongside an All-Star dancer instead of one of their fellow finalists. She says the new format has also made her a better judge. “Of course, when the all-stars really stand out or have a really amazing performance, you can say something,” Mia Michaels says, “but I find that I am a better judge because I am focused on one person and I can see the strengths and the weaknesses in a little more detail than before.”
