July 13, 2010 07:21 AM by Nancy Floyd

Project Runway is returning to Lifetime for its eighth season on July 29th, but not without a few significant changes. For starters, the episodes will be extended to 90 minutes, instead of the typical hour. As if that’s not enough, a special celebrity guest will be helping Heidi Klum and Co. select this season’s 16 finalists. Keep reading for more details on Project Runway’s alterations and how Selma Blair will be involved…

The eighth season of Project Runway will be kicking off on July 29th on Lifetime. The fashion designing competition has also been extended to feature 90-minute episodes each week, instead of 60-minute episodes. “We did get always a few complaints from people that they wanted to see a little bit more, which we were obviously very excited about,” host Heidi Klum says. “So now we have half an hour more.”

The 16 finalists vying for the chance to showcase their collections at New York City Fashion Week will be determined, in part, by special celebrity guest judge, Selma Blair. The first challenge of season 8 will be part of the audition process as 17 designers are whittled down to 16. Selma Blair will help judges Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia make the tough decision of which 16 designers should officially be finalists on the show. The designers will be given five hours to craft a garment using an item from one of their fellow competitors’ luggage. The creators of Project Runway are thrilled to have Selma Blair on board, as she’s been a dream judge for quite some time. “We’ve been wanting to have Selma Blair onProject Runway for a while,” executive producer Jane Cha says. “She is so chic and has great individual style.”

When Project Runway returns for its supersized eighth season, it promises more fashion, more drama, and more reality. “We are not like other shows where we are styling them to look a certain way or feeding them lines,” Heidi Klum says. “It’s all real, and people like that.”
