After six seasons of friendships, breakups, makeups, and drama, MTV‘s The Hills has finally come to an end. The series finale aired on Tuesday and left fans reeling with it’s shocking final moments. After Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner share a tearful goodbye, the cameras pull back, the Hollywood backdrop slides away, and it turns out the entire scene was filmed on a Hollywood lot. The stars loved the surprising twist which is a nod and a wink towards the criticism the show has endured over the years for being scripted and contrived.
“Brody and I were speechless when we filmed the finale,†Kristin Cavallari told People magazine. “We couldn’t have asked for a better ending. Producers probably knew the cast would reveal secrets, and it’s better to be in on the joke than to look like an idiot. I couldn’t be happier.â€
“That day of filming it was surreal to me because they wouldn’t tell me what we were filming,” Brody Jenner says about the surprise ending. “I think the show has always battled with what’s real and what’s fake, and this ending was perfect because you still don’t know what was real, what was fake and it’s kind of like L.A. in a sense. I thought it was very clever and I was happy with it. I was stoked they were ending it with me. I was flattered.”
Brody Jenner also hints at an alternate ending filmed with Lauren Conrad. ”We filmed a couple different endings and we didn’t know which one they were gonna use. There were some other ones that were great as well,” Brody Jenner says. “One of the other endings, Lauren [Conrad] was in it. She had come back into the show for the last episode. I come back home, and basically Lauren’s at my place [and I tell her about saying goodbye to a friend]. We filmed this whole lovey-dovey scene as if me and Lauren had been together this entire time. So it was another fun, cool ending. … I think they thought it would confuse the viewers.”
As to whether or not The Hills was real, Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner don’t think viewers should put too much stock into the relationships and drama that they’ve seen over the years. A few days ago, Kristin Cavallari said, ”Nothing you see on TV is real. Fans need to understand it’s all entertainment. It’s all in fun. I would never put my close friends or a real relationship on a show.â€
Brody Jenner echoes her sentiments. “I would say it’s entertainment and just enjoy it; don’t question it too much,” Brody Jenner says. “There were a lot of moments that were real and a lot of moments that were not so real.”
