On Tuesday night’s series finale of MTV‘s The Hills, the final shot seemed to suggest that the entire show was fake. As Brody Jenner and Kristin Cavallari exchanged a tearful goodbye, the cameras pulled back to reveal that the entire scene was filmed on a studio lot. Despite the surprise Hollywood ending, Lo Bosworth insists the show, situations, and relationships were totally real…
The series finale of MTV‘s The Hills has everyone buzzing about just how real the reality series was. Over the years, the show has come under scrutiny for being scripted, contrived, and fake. Kristin Cavallari, the show’s narrator, even said, “Nothing you see on TV is real.” One of the reality show’s stars, Lo Bosworth, insists that the ending was nothing more than a joke and the series was completely authentic.
“Don’t worry. It wasn’t fake,” Lo Bosworth wrote on her blog, The Lo Down. “I have never shot any ‘Hills’ scenes on a stage of any kind.” Lo Bosworth insists that the surprise Hollywood ending was a clever way to poke fun at the endless rumors about the show’s authenticity. “Rest assured, we were simply poking fun in the way that our viewers have done since the show began to air,” she says. “Our show’s undeniable production value sometimes made the validity of it all questionable, but in truth (and this really is the truth), the relationships with those on the show are real.”
While Lo Bosworth insists that the show was pure reality, she does acknowledge that certain relationships needed a little prodding along the way. “Lauren, Kristin, and I have known each other since we were all under 5ft tall. No conspiracy there,” she says. “As for the others-we met them all when moving to L.A. Sure, some relationships were pushed by producers, but once pushed, blossomed into real life friendship (or hatred, take your pick).”
