This season of So You Think You Can Dance, B-boy Jose Ruiz has quickly become a judge favorite among the finalists. Despite the fact that he lacks the technical training or ability of the other dancers, it seems Jose can do no wrong in the eyes of Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, and Adam Shankman. Are they too easy on Jose this season? Keep reading for more details on what Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman have to say about Jose’s special treatment…
Every season on So You Think You Can Dance, the judges seem to find their favorites among the finalists. Typically, the dancers to receive the most praise are the ones with the most training and technicality. This year, however, B-boy Jose Ruiz has seemed to find favor among Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, and Adam Shankman, despite the fact that his dancing is only so-so. His personality, on the other hand, is perhaps the best on the show, but are the judges going too easy on him?
“I think we are, absolutely,” says executive producer and lead judge, Nigel Lythgoe. He defends their special treatment of Jose Ruiz though, noting how spectacular Jose’s personality and charisma is. ”Dancing isn’t about technique,” Lythgoe adds to TV Guide. “Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly would never be stars if it was about technique. Neither of them had great technique; they had charisma and Jose has incredible charisma.”
Fellow judge Adam Shankman thinks that Jose Ruiz is doing quite well considering the tough choreography that’s been thrown his way.. ”The choreographers’ job is to get them through, not to try to challenge them beyond their abilities,” he says. ”The kid has never taken choreography before; isn’t that a challenge? He has no training!”
At the end of the day, Nigel Lythgoe stands by his praise and adoration of Jose Ruiz because of both his dancing and his charisma. ”This is not some little show where amateurs come on, because you have got to be f—ing brilliant to get on this show right now,” Nigel Lythgoe tells TV Guide. “Every one of [the dancers], in their own way, is quite brilliant. You don’t get charisma like Jose.”
