Although MTV‘s The Hills is officially over and Spencer Pratt wasn’t included in the finale, he’s still desperately trying to stay in the limelight. His recent separation from wife, Heidi Montag, is drawing criticism and skepticism from fans, family, and friends, but Spencer Pratt insists their pending divorce is real. He opens up about the reasons for the split, blaming his own obsession with fame for the breakup…

It should come as no surprise to hear Spencer Pratt call himself a “fame whore.” Since his first episode on MTV‘s The Hills, he’s been stirring up drama, creating controversy, and trying to be the center of attention. What is surprising, however, is that he is willing to divorce his wife, Heidi Montag, because of it. Spencer Pratt opens up about the reasons for their recent split, citing his own need for fame as the main issue between the pair.

“We love each other but I’m a fame whore and I’ll never grow out of it,” Spencer Pratt tells People magazine. “[Heidi] knows that and doesn’t want that. I want every kind of press. She believes in bad press. There’s no way my love for fame and her love for puppies will ever work out successfully. She just wants to hike and hang out and be calmer.”

Spencer Pratt insists that the couple’s split is the real deal, despite the fact that no divorce papers have been filed. Even their close friends and family are questioning their sincerity, wondering if the separation is a desperate attempt to drum up more press. Spencer Pratt says that Heidi Montag was hoping he’d change, but that isn’t likely to happen. “She thought I’d burn out of this, but no, I’m still the same Spencer who went on The Hills to be famous,” he says. “I still need to do stunts and take cues from Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.”

Now that his reality TV days are over, Spencer Pratt is trying his hand at art. ”I’m switching it up,” he says. “I’ve already gone for the blonde, spiky-haired look. Now I’m going for the Hollywood producer look. I’m an artist now. I have an easel and everything. I’m going for an art show and a gallery.”
