Before she was a choreographer and resident judge on So You Think You Can Dance, Mia Michaels had dreams of being a dancer. Unfortunately, her body type made that dream an impossibility, but she admits to struggling with weight and body image issues as a result. At one point, Mia Michaels was so desperate to find success in dancing that she says she wanted to be anorexic. Keep reading for more details on Mia Michaels’ struggle with her body…

Mia Michaels has earned a name for herself as a brilliant, Emmy Award-winning choreographer and judge on So You Think You Can Dance, but once upon a time she had dreams of becoming a dancer. Her thicker frame made it impossible for her to find the same level of success as stick-thin dancers, but she was desperate to make it in the dance world. “Directors would say, ‘You’re so good, but we can’t use you because of your body,’” Mia Michaels tells In Touch Weekly in an exclusive interview.“I remember actually wanting to be anorexic.”

Mia Michaels says her weight struggles and body image issues began when she started taking ballet. “Ballet dancers are so tiny, and I was always a big girl. I remember thinking my goal was to be as small as they were, so I was going to just eat a bowl of oatmeal once a day,” she says. Fortunately, the choreographer couldn’t bring herself to take such drastic measures. “It wasn’t in my makeup. Being anorexic wasn’t me. I am too passionate about life.”

Although Mia Michaels is happy with her career as a choreographer, she says that she does still dream about being a dancer and admits to getting caught up in insecurity about her body. “We are all guilty of getting caught up in things that are unimportant, like a couple of extra pounds on our body,” she says. “I would have loved a career as a dancer. But if I had a tiny little dancer’s body, I don’t think I would have been the choreographer I am today.”
