The Bachelorette: Chris Harrison Discusses Ali Fedotowsky’s Quest For Love

August 03, 2010 07:30 AM by Nancy Floyd

Another long season of heartache, hot tubbing, and helicopters concluded on ABC‘s The Bachelorette last night when Ali Fedotowsky accepted an engagement ring from Roberto Martinez. Host Chris Harrison was there for every dramatic rose ceremony, shocking elimination, and scandal to comfort, encourage, and advise Ali Fedotowsky. He discusses Ali Fedotowsky’s grueling search for love, the most painful moments to watch, and the surprise of Roberto’s proposal…

Chris Harrison was more than just the host of this season of ABC‘s The Bachelorette. He also served as a mediator, encourager, bearer of bad news, and shoulder to cry on for Ali Fedotowsky. He talks about her long, sometimes painful, journey to find love. During the course of the season, Ali Fedotowsky had to deal with not one, not two, but there girlfriends that the bachelors were harboring back home. Justin “Rated R” Rego was kicked off the show after Ali Fedotowksy uncovered that he had two girlfriends back at home and was using the show for fame. Frontrunner Frank made it to the top three before he eliminated himself in Tahiti to reunite with his ex.

“The Justin thing wasn’t that emotional,” Chris Harrison says. “I was proud she kicked his butt and had him limping out of Turkey. But Frank was tougher. As a friend, I wanted to run to the palapa and stop her from going inside because I knew what she was walking into. He made her feel weak and small. No one wants a friend to feel that.”

Chris Harrison spent much of his time trying to motivate and encourage Ali Fedotowsky during her time on the show. “When it came to love, Ali’s like a defenseless little puppy,” Chris Harrison says. “She had a lot of insecurities despite being a beautiful, strong and successful woman. She was really scared she’d love someone and they wouldn’t love her back. I tried to pump her up and walk her through the best I can, but you just have to let it play out, good or bad. There were several moments where we thought we might lose her. After Frank left at such a late point, we didn’t know how she’d react.”

Chris Harrison relishes the opportunities when he is given more responsibility than announcing the final rose of the evening or dubbing every week the most dramatic rose ceremony ever. “I’m more of an adviser and life coach who goes under the title of TV show host,” he says. “I’ve changed a lot and grown over the show’s eight years. The producers trust me to know how to treat a moment. That’s also how I can do those tough interviews like with Jake and Vienna and remain friends with everyone. I don’t have sides. I give them all a fair shake.”

Despite all the heartache of this season, Ali Fedotowsky managed to find happiness with Roberto Martinez. According to Chris Harrison, the crew went wild when he proposed in Bora Bora. “Like Ali, we never really know if there’s going to be a proposal until the bachelor gets down on one knee and pops the question,” he said. “This is one reason I know this show is so compelling. When we’re taping that final day, we’re glued to our TV monitors just like you, waiting to see what happens. When Roberto got down on one knee and proposed to Ali, we all went nuts just like you and your friends probably did. ”

Chris Harrison is confident in Ali Fedotowsky’s decision and her happiness with Roberto. “It was a beautiful proposal, and I know these two truly love each other,” Chris Harrison said. “I’ve seen Ali on several occasions and spent time with the two of them on the “After the Final Rose” set. They are incredibly happy and looking forward to moving in together and starting their new life together.”
