The top four dancers takes the stage on tonight’s new episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Only three dancers will make it through to next week’s season finale so the pressure is on for Kent, Robert, AdeChike, and Lauren. With the judges powerless to determine the elimination, the fate of these four dancers rests on America’s votes. Keep reading for all the details about tonight’s dramatic, sexy, and moving routines…
The top four dancers have one last chance to perform on So You Think You Can Dance before next week’s season finale. Everything depends strictly on America’s votes which is a relief to judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels, and Adam Shankman. Tonight, choreographer Tyce Diorio joins the judging panel to offer his wisdom and dramatic flair.
The first performance of the night is a group routine with all four dancers. The Guys & Dolls Broadway routine is choreographed by guest judge, Tyce Diorio. The routine is fun and flirty and the crowd seems to love it. I don’t know if it’s just because Lauren’s the only girl or because she’s wearing such an adorable outfit, but for me, she totally steals the spotlight in this piece. For Tyce, Kent was the stand-out dancer, but he has complimentary words for everyone.
Lauren takes the stage next for a tango with All-Star Pasha. The sexy routine is choreographed by Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo and I can’t help but notice that Lauren is getting awfully close to my boyfriend. Back off, girl! The routine is slow and sultry, but full of power. Lauren is especially convincing playing the mature, seductive vixen, especially for a girl who is only 18 and started the season off coming across cute and girly all the time. Nigel Lythgoe calls is magnificent, Mia Michaels calls it mature and mesmerizing, Tyce Diorio talks nonsense and uses a lot of sound effects but overall, he was impressed, and Adam Shankman first proposes to Nigel in honor of the overturning of Proposition 8 and then sings to Lauren.
Next, AdeChike is working on an African jazz routine with All-Star Lauren. The routine, choreographed by Sean Cheesman, is about two people looking for the promised land. The routine is energetic and powerful, but I’m not gonna lie…I feel like I’m watching a cruise ship performance mixed with the dance from Can’t Buy Me Love. The judges aren’t blown away either, feeling as though AdeChike’s execution of the routine was lacking something.
Robert and Anya take the stage next for a Viennese Waltz choreographed by Jonathan Roberts. The beautiful and elegant routine wins praise from the judges. Nigel Lythgoe commends Robert on his technical brilliance and calls the piece superb. Mia Michaels thinks Robert is the “prince of this season” and that his dancing is beautiful. Adam Shankman thought Robert was brilliant.
Kent is up next, taking on disco with All-Star Courtney. They’re working with choreographer Doriana Sanchez for a fun and challenging routine about finding love on the dance floor. As to be expected of disco routines, this piece is full of high energy and difficult lifts. Kent and Courtney manage to pull it off, but not without their share of difficulties. Nigel and Tyce think the performance was ok, but Mia and Adam deem it Kent’s worst performance of the season.
Lauren returns to the stage for her second performance of the night. She’s partnering with Ade for a jazz routine choreographed by Sean Cheesman. Once again, Lauren is playing a sexy seductress which is made abundantly clear by the full-body lacy pantyhose getup she’s wearing. I feel a little violated for her. The routine is incredibly impressive and features a few mind-blowing stunts. Nigel Lythgoe hopes Lauren makes it to the finale, Tyce Diorio gives her two snaps (literally), Mia Michaels thought it was amazing, and Adam Shankman wants to hire Lauren.
AdeChike works with All-Star Kathryn on a piece choreographed by Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden. AdeChike’s particularly excited to perform the routine since Desmond Richardson was his personal inspiration as a dancer. The routine is a potpourri of several different styles designed to showcase AdeChike’s talents and abilities. The performance is quick-paced and powerful, but doesn’t really blow the judges away. All in all, everyone is expecting a little more from AdeChike but he’s just not delivering.
Robert is tackling hip hop next. In the routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon, Robert is joining All-Star Dominic to play a couple of deranged clowns. They come out looking like the Joker from Dark Knight and dance their way through balloons in the quirky and dark performance that feels reminiscent of something Wade Robson would choreograph. It’s definitely one of the most brilliant and entertaining routines of the season! Nigel calls it tremendous, Tyce calls it everything and a bag of chips, Mia thought it was dope and perfect, and Adam thought Robert outdanced Dominic.
The final performance of the night belongs to Kent. He partners with All-Star Neil for a contemporary routine choreographed by Travis Wall. The two guys play friends whose friendship comes to a painful end. The piece is strong, moving, and absolutely beautiful to watch. All four judges are completely blown away. Nigel Lythgoe calls it stunning, outstanding, and the performance of the night; Tyce Diorio can’t say anything other than “are you kidding me?!”; Mia Michaels is speechless and moved to tears; and Adam Shankman thinks if this were the finale, Kent would’ve just won the competition.
The show is over and now it’s up to America!! The judges have absolutely no say in this week’s elimination so it all comes down to which dancers receive the votes. Tune into So You Think You Can Dance tomorrow night at 9pm EST on FOX to find out which dancer will be going home and which three dancers have earned a spot in the finale!
