Tonight, on an all-new episode of Project Runway, the competition gets started as the 16 finalists design an outfit for Marie Claire magazine. The winner of tonight’s challenge gets his/her garment used on a major billboard campaign for the fashion magazine. Tensions run high as the designers move in together, struggle to complete their garments on time, and second-guess themselves. Keep reading for all the details on tonight’s episode…

The competition is officially underway on a new episode of Project Runway. The 16 finalists have moved into their temporary digs at the Atlas in New York City. It’s their first day at the apartment and already Mondo is feeling like an outcast. The designers meet Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn on a NYC rooftop to learn about this week’s challenge.

Marie Claire editor, Joanna Coles, is serving as the guest judge this week and she delivers the assignment to the designers. They’ll have one day to design a look that sums up the Marie Claire woman: someone who is intelligent, practical, confident, sexy, and fashion-forward. A lot is on the line since the winner of the competition will receive his/her look displayed on a billboard campaign for the magazine.

The designers are given a few minutes to brainstorm and sketch their designs before heading off to Mood Fabrics. At the store, Peach struggles to find the fabrics she needs, Ivy is on the verge of a major breakdown, and Mondo comes equipped with a detailed shopping list. Back at the workroom, the designers are given until midnight to work on their designs. A.J. gets his game face on immediately, refusing to help Casanova with his patterns, while Valerie panics about her fabrics, colors, and design.

When Tim Gunn visits the workroom, he’s “responds positively” to Valerie’s trench coat dress, he commends Mondo on his work in the last challenge, and he questions Jason’s aesthetic. Casanova’s look strikes Tim Gunn as matronly which is quite a departure from the hooker dress he made last week.

Fresh off her win last week, Gretchen feels pressure to deliver a great piece hence her ambitious decision to make pants by herself for the first time ever. Michael is overly confident about his jacket until Tim rips it to shreds. After getting some advice from Tim, Peach decides to start over on her outfit. Her second attempt at a skirt fails so she goes back to the drawing board. Again. Hopefully the third outfit is a charm.

The designers are thrilled to hear that the next morning they’ll be taking part in a Marie Claire fashion shoot with their models. Since the winner of this challenge will have his/her look featured on a New York City billboard, the photo shoot will be a determining factor in the runway judging.

At the end of the workday, Peach is still stressed about her outfit and doesn’t know if she’ll be able to continue in the competition. Back at the apartment, the girls are getting along great, but there’s already drama with the boys. A.J. thinks Jason is shady and Mondo is feeling so lonely he’s moved to tears. He seems like a total weirdo but I really want to give him a hug.

The next morning, the designers are in a mad dash to finish their outfits, style their models, and get ready for the photo shoot. Mondo questions his instincts as he preps his model and Jason hastily finishes his dress using safety pins. Staples last week, safety pins this week. This guy is 0 for 2 when it comes to actually finishing a garment. The designers and their models head to the photo shoot. Peach struggles with her model’s personality, Jason’s dress photographs horribly, and Mondo gives his model some interesting instruction to try to capture a good pic.

At the runway show, Heidi Klum introduces the judges, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors, and guest judge Joanna Coles. The models take the runway to show off the Marie Claire-inspired styles. During the show, Jason feels confident in his look despite the safety pins, A.J. is nervous about the presentation of his garment, Peach is pleased with her tailoring ability, Michael is horrified by how short his dress looks, and Valerie loves seeing her outfit on the runway.

After the runway show, ten designers are immediately safe and told to leave the runway. A.J. breaks down into hysterics over his relief to be safe for another week. Slightly overdramatic reaction for the second week in the competition, bro. Backstage, the designers discuss which finalist they think will be eliminated. Everyone’s money is on Jason. The six remaining designers (Peach, Jason, Nicholas, Valerie, Gretchen, and Mondo) represent the top three and bottom three looks. The judges hate Peach’s dress, but they’re impressed with her ability to sew fast and tailor. Valerie’s garment wins praise from all four judges, Jason takes a beating for his dress and photo, and Gretchen’s outfit is deemed modern, cool, and easy.

Nina Garcia thinks Nicholas’ miniskirt, shirt, and cape are overly detailed and Joanna Coles calls it unsexy. All four judges love Mondo’s fun and whimsical outfit and are impressed with his photo. Mondo explains that his photo was inspired by Mary Tyler Moore which wins big points from Joanna Coles who says Mary Tyler Moore was the reason she moved to America.

The judges send the designers backstage so they can deliberate about who to eliminate. Once the judge reach their decision, the competitors return to learn their fate. Mondo and Valerie are both in, meaning Gretchen is the winner for the second week in a row. Naturally, Gretchen is thrilled by her success, but the other competitors aren’t so enthused. Of the bottom three designers, Peach is the only one who is safe. Jason and Nicholas are both sent home. Jason is ticked by the news and walks off the set immediately, while Nicholas has a complete emotional meltdown. He’s not going to be a big fan of his cry face when he watches this episode.
