Project Runway: Party (Supply) Dress!
August 12, 2010 09:07 PM by Nancy Floyd
It’s time for an unconventional challenge on tonight’s episode of Project Runway. The remaining designers have to make a garment using supplies from a party store! Keep reading for more details on dresses made from napkins, streamers, tablecloths, palm trees, and ribbon, plus find out which designer was taken to the emergency room…
Tonight’s episode of Project Runway starts with Gretchen talking about her two victories. In a bit of ironic editing, we see a clip of Gretchen talking about how supportive and loving the other designers are followed by a clip of the other designers badmouthing Gretchen and discussing how much they hate her. Like her or not, she definitely seems to be the designer to beat this season given she has currently won 100% of the challenges.
The designers meet Tim Gunn outside a New York City party store to learn about what’s next. Their unconventional challenge this week is to create a garment out of items from the party store. The finalists have $100 and 30 minutes to shop. A.J. is totally in his element, given his typical use of weird materials. Gretchen, however, is having a hard time coping with the cheesiness of the store while Casanova seems completely clueless. Despite the fact that Tim Gunn just told everyone the judges frown upon the use of fabric-like materials (such as tablecloths and wrapping paper), Casanova goes directly for the tablecloths and wrapping paper. Brilliant.
Back at the workroom, the designers are thrilled to hear that the winner of this challenge will get immunity. Everyone is horrified to watch Casanova murder a bagful of stuffed plush puppies. A.J., meanwhile, won’t stop talking about his previous experience using unconventional materials. Valerie’s attempting to make a halter dress with napkins and streamers while Sarah works on creating a sleek party dress out of a palm tree.
Gretchen annoys the other contestants by trying to channel her inner Tim Gunn and give unsolicited advice to every other designer. Tim Gunn finally stops by the workroom to check on the designers’ progress. A.J. tries to make excuses for himself and hopefully take some of the pressure off of himself. Valerie’s black and white napkin dress impresses Tim, Kristen’s colorful garment using “animal wooly balls” leaves Tim laughing until he’s in tears, and Michael’s red dress makes Tim proud. Sarah’s palm tree dress is playful and fun, but she struggles to piece it together. Tim is worried about Casanova’s garments, but intrigued by Andy’s ambitious dress using nothing but ribbons.
The models arrive a short while later with a special surprise for the designers. Each contestant is presented with a gift bag filled with more party supplies. They have to use the materials to create an accessory to complement their garment. Naturally, no one’s too enthused by this unforeseen curveball.
The next morning, Gretchen worries about how the other designers will react if she wins again and Mondo contemplates whether or not its a fake mustache kind of day. Is there ever a day when a fake mustache isn’t appropriate?! In the workroom, the designers have two hours to finish their garments and accessories while the models are in hair and makeup. Peach and April chip in to help Andy finish his garment while Ivy recruits her model to assist her. Christopher is nervous his model will tear his napkin dress and Sarah has to use hot glue to get her palm tree dress onto the model.
At the runway show, Heidi Klum welcomes the designers and introduces the judges. Joining herself, Nina Garcia, and Michael Kors is eccentric fashion designer Betsey Johnson. Christopher’s napkin dress is the first to hit the runway and it’s totally stunning! Andy’s amazed by how his ribbon dress turned out, A.J. thinks his dress could win, Michael’s red cocktail dress is beautiful, and not surprisingly Gretchen is in love with her own outfit. Casanova is proud of his tablecloth dress, Kristen’s worried about the stiff fabric of her garment, and Sarah’s just grateful her dress is actually in one piece.
Heidi Klum dismisses the designers with high enough scores to keep them around for another week. The six designers with the highest and lowest scores are A.J., Sarah, Casanova, Gretchen, Valerie, and Andy. The judges think Valerie’s napkin dress is sophisticated, beautiful, and sexy. A.J.’s dress looks silly, campy, and like a hot mess. Andy’s ribbon dress, on the other hand, is exciting, remarkable, and beautiful.
Casanova’s disaster is pretty much a huge disaster. Micahel Kors calls his model a “transvestite flamenco dancer at a funeral.” Sarah’s dress is simple and sad. The judges think Gretchen’s outfit is fabulous, cool, and modern. While the judges deliberate, the designers get into a bit of a tussle backstage over Gretchen’s incessant talking.
The designers are called back to the runway to find out the results. Valerie is in, but she doesn’t win the challenge. Gretchen’s reign as champion ends tonight as Andy is crowned the winner of the party supply challenge. Gretchen and A.J. are also safe for another week. It comes down to Casanova (too overworked) and Sarah (too boring and safe). Casanova is given another chance to prove himself meaning that Sarah is eliminated tonight.
After Sarah’s elimination, Ivy passes out in the hallway. The paramedics show up at the apartment to take her to the hospital. On that dramatic note, the show ends, leaving us in suspense about Ivy’s fate. Tune into Project Runway on Lifetime next Thursday at 9pm EST to see how Ivy’s doing and to watch the designers struggle with a hat-inspired challenge!
