So You Think You Can Dance Season Finale 08/12/10: America’s Favorite Dancer

August 12, 2010 07:34 PM by Nancy Floyd

It’s time to crown America’s Favorite Dancer on tonight’s season finale of So You Think You Can Dance! But first, the finalists and All-stars perform some of the most memorable and outstanding routines from this season. Will Kent, Lauren, or Robert walk away with the victory and $250,000? Keep reading to find out what happens tonight…

Tonight’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance starts with an edgy and eccentric group performance from this season’s top 11 finalists and All-Star dancers. The piece was choreographed by someone named Christopher Scott, I think. All I can concentrate on is the fact that Doogie Howser is sitting behind him!!! Welcome to the show, Mr. Neil Patrick Harris. So nice of you to join us.

Before Cat Deeley introduces the judges, we’re treated to a little video montage dedicated to Nigel Lythgoe‘s many changing hair styles, Mia Michaels tendency to make up words, and Adam Shankman‘s wacky facial expressions. The three permanent judges are joined by choreographers Tyce Diorio, Stacey Tookey, Kenny Ortega, and the hot tamale train conductor, Mary Murphy for tonight’s season finale.

The viewers are given a little reminder of what went down on last night’s episode, complete with commentary from the top three dancers, Kent, Lauren and Robert. In their words, they felt nervous, awesome, great, proud, jazzed, amazing, good, and powerful last night.

Throughout tonight’s episode, the seven (yes, count ‘em 7!) judges will pick their favorite routines from the season for the dancers to perform again. Kenny Ortega is up first and his pick is Kent and Neil‘s Shoeless Joe Broadway piece (aka the baseball routine). If you want to see Kent and Neil dance together, why not choose the dance choreographed by Travis Wall? In any case, Kent and Neil do a great job the second time around.

Next, it’s Nigel Lythgoe’s turn and he chooses a contemporary routine choreographed by Stacey Tookey starring Billy and Ade. In case you missed it, Billy and Ade play old friends who went down really different paths in life. Ade’s a successful businessman and Billy’s a homeless man. Definitely one of the most brilliant dances from this season and it’s danced amazing once again.

After Billy and Ade’s routine, it’s time for a guest performance from a super cool hip hop dance troupe called Quest. Interesting So You Think You Can Dance tidbit: the group features Hawk who competed on season three. If you remember Hawk, you won’t be surprised to hear that this dance troupe is amazing and stunt heavy. Note to self: figure out a way to do a backflip and land only on your head.

Mia Michaels’ favorite routine from this season featured AdeChike and Comfort. It was choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon to Alicia Keys’ Fallen. This routine was incredible the first time it was performed and, if I do say so myself, I think it got better the second time around.

After a reminder of all the make-out sessions that happened on (and off) stage this season, Kent and Anya take the stage for their high-energy cha-cha to My First Kiss. After the performance, it’s time to find out Tyce Diorio’s favorite routine this summer. It’s the deranged clown hip hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon starring Robert and Dominic. It rocked my face off a few weeks ago when I first saw it and didn’t disappoint tonight.

Next, it’s more highlights from National Dance Day. Blah, blah, blah. Filler, filler, filler. Nigel Lythgoe follows it up by coming on stage to perform the big tap routine he’s been talking about all season. Nigel appears on crutches (yawn!), talks about being injured, is interrupted by a cute 6-year old boy named Luke who taps instead. And I can say with confidence the kid is a billion times better than Nigel could hope to be. Afterwards, the Manzari brothers take the stage for a tap routine as well. I’m impressed, but bored.

Lauren takes the stage next for an Argentine Tango with Pasha, per Nigel Lythgoe’s request. Why is Lauren constantly dancing with my boyfriend? It’s getting a little old watching her try to seduce him while wearing lacy lingerie. In any case, they nail the performance.

Adam Shankman’s favorite routine is what he calls “the routine of the season.” It’s the Travis Wall choreographed piece to Coldplay’s Fix You starring Robert and Allison. I get chills just thinking about their routine and watching it a second time is even more powerful than the first.

After the moving piece, it’s time for one last performance from the reigning champion of So You Think You Can Dance, Russell. He’s joined for a krump routine by Lil C. Can I take this moment to comment on a great tragedy that has occurred this season? No Lil C on the judging panel! That guy is pure entertainment all the time. Trying to translate his nonsensical ramblings has been one of my favorite parts of this show in seasons past. In any case, I guess Russell and Lil C do a good job. I have no idea. I don’t really get krump. It seems like just a bunch of arm flailing and chest bumping to me.

It’s time for Mary Murphy’s favorite routine of this season. She opts for the B-boy routine starring Jose and Dominic. As to be expected, they do a phenomenal job. I really don’t have anything else to say about this piece.

As a special treat to Americans, we’re given a chance to see the winner of So You Think You Can Dance UK, Charlie Bruce. She joins Neil for a contemporary routine choreographed by Mandy Moore. My first impression is that they’re wearing flowy outfits, dancing to Celine Dion, and there’s a great deal of fog on the stage. Bor-ing! And then Charlie Bruce blows my freaking mind with her brilliant dancing! I vote for her to win over Kent, Robert, and Lauren put together.

With 45 minutes left in the show, Cat Deeley brings out Robert, Kent, and Lauren to deliver the first of the results. It’s clear that Robert is gearing up to recreate his Bollywood routine from earlier this season given his sparkly Indian outfit. Cat makes a joke about it being one of the best elimination outfits ever before opening the card and revealing that, in actuality, Robert is being eliminated. He finished in third place after last night’s vote, but is grateful to have made it this far.

After Robert’s farewell, it’s time for another one of Adam Shankman’s favorites this year and it’s yet another Tabitha and Napoleon routine. This one is featuring Lauren and Twitch. It’s the Wild West inspired routine set to My Chick Bad. Given Lauren’s growth this season, this routine is a million times better tonight than it was the first time they danced it.

Cat Deely is actually given the chance to choose her favorite routine from the season. Unfortunately, it’s not one that’s able to be performed live, but the original performance is played again onscreen. It’s the Sonya Tajeh choreographed routine to Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah featuring Alex and Allison. Yep, still amazing.

It’s time for Robert’s Bollywood number. Partnered with Billy, the upbeat, high energy routine is Stacey Tookey’s pick for the night. It’s good but all I can think of when I see Robert in that shiny Indian garb is Aladdin. Prince Ali, fabulous he…

Mia Michaels’ final selection for the night is the absolutely amazing and stunning contemporary routine featuring Kent and Neil. Choreographed by Travis Wall, I think this is easily my favorite piece from the season and it’s just as moving the second time around.

Before revealing the final results and the identity of America’s Favorite Dancer, Cat Deeley welcomes Black Gold to the stage. They perform their single Shine which is used every week for the elimination videos. I bet they enjoy those royalty checks week after week. In an effort to make the performance more moving, viewers are treated to a video montage of some of the more emotional moments from the season. I will not cry, I will not cry, I will not….sniff sniff.

There’s time for one final dance before the results are revealed. All night long, Cat Deeley has been hinting at a major surprise guest showing up tonight. In an effort to recreate the amazing hip hop routine that Alex and Twitch did earlier this season, a “dance legend” has been invited to join Twitch on stage. The music starts, Twitch takes the stage, opens the door and there is…Ellen Degeneres!! Brilliant! She does a hilarious job recreating the amazing Tabitha and Napoleon routine.

With all the routines finished, it’s time to announce a winner. Lauren and Kent join Cat Deeley for the results. After a pause that lasts an eternity, Cat announces that America’s Favorite Dancer is….LAUREN!!! Wow. I would’ve bet money on it being Kent. In any case, Lauren is thrilled, the crowd goes crazy, and all the other finalists seem genuinely happy for her. Congratulations Lauren!
