After a So You Think You Can Dance season where boys seemed to dominate, it was actually a female dancer who was crowned the winner! Contemporary dancer Lauren Froderman was named America’s Favorite Dancer on last night’s season finale and she still can’t believe it. Keep reading for more details on how Lauren feels about her victory and what judges Mia Michaels and Adam Shankman have to say about the surprising winner…

At the beginning of season 7 of So You Think You Can Dance, it seemed inevitable that a male would walk away with the victory this year. With only two female winners in history and a strong slew of male competitors this year, no one was sure a girl would even make it to the finals much less be crowned America’s Favorite Dancer, but 18-year old contemporary dancer Lauren Froderman proved everyone wrong. After growing stronger and stronger each week, Lauren was named the champion on last night’s season finale.

“I can’t believe it. I’ve been the last girl standing for quite some time and to be able to win … It’s just crazy,” Lauren said after the show. “I feel like it’s a dream, and I never want to wake up if this is a dream.” In addition to earning the title of America’s Favorite Dancer, Lauren also receives $250,000, a cover shoot for Dance Spirit magazine, and a new deal with Gatorade as their first ever dance athlete.

For judge Adam Shankman, he thought all three finalists could’ve won, but he’s especially proud of Lauren. “They were all worthy,” he told People magazine. “But there was something that was really great about watching a season that was dominated by male contestants where Lauren was still the last girl standing and she surged.”

Mia Michaels couldn’t be more thrilled about Lauren’s win, despite the fact that she’s been rooting for Kent Boyd all season.  “Girls Rock!” Mia said after the show. “Those three were the three to be in the finale, but I think America got it right for sure. When it came down to [Lauren and Kent] standing there on stage I was rooting for Lauren,” she said.

Third-place finisher, Robert Roldan is happy with himself regardless of the results, but Kent Boyd is understandably disappointed that he didn’t win. “Coming in third means coming in first for me,” said Robert Roldan. “It doesn’t matter what place I came in, I was so proud of what happened and it’s made me grow in ways that I never thought I would.”

“It was like ‘aww shucks, didn’t win,” Kent Boyd said about coming in second. “I think anyone would be disappointed because I worked hard too, but Lauren is an incredible dancer and an amazing person.”
