Up until last night, Amazing Race was the only reality TV show to ever win the Emmy award for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The show has taken home the trophy seven years in a row, since the award was created in 2003, but last night, their victorious reign was ended by Top Chef! Keep reading for more details on Top Chef’s big night…
Most of the reality TV Emmy awards were handed out last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony, but there was still one big one left: Outstanding-Reality Competition Program. For the fourth straight year in a row, the five shows nominated were Amazing Race, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Project Runway, and Top Chef. Since Amazing Race has walked away with the Emmy Award for seven straight years, it seemed like they’d take the victory again, but Top Chef ended their winning streak.
The victory was the first Emmy win for the producers of Top Chef. When executive producer Dan Cutforth went to accept the award, he said, “It’s something we never expected, and I have nothing prepared to say.” He added, “On behalf of all of us standing here, I want to thank the amazing chefs we work with, because this show is all about their incredible talent and without them the show would be nothing.”
Backstage after the win, Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi said even she assumed Amazing Race would win again. ”In fact, I was really, really mean to the host of ‘Amazing Race’ [Phil Keoghan] on the red carpet,” she said. “I told him I was taking him down.”
