MasterChef: Joe Bastianich Launches Multimillion Dollar Project “Eataly”

September 07, 2010 04:00 PM by Lisa Princ

Our favorite emotionless judge on Masterchef on FOX Joe Bastianich sure is busy these days. Aside taking care of numerous restaurants, wineries and judging MasterChef, Joe Bastianich has recently launched a multimillion dollar project “Eataly” with the help of his mom and famous Food Network Chef Mario Batali. Now if you guessed that it involves Italian food, you guessed correctly! Keep reading for all the tasty details!

Eataly, is a 50,000 square foot space in the heart of Manhattan that features multiple Italian restaurants, including a fine-dining Italian steakhouse called Manzo, a Neapolitan pizzeria and a year-round rooftop beer garden and microbrewery, as well as a culinary school. Who better to launch this than Masterchef‘s own Joe Bastianich? Joe had some help on this one as his mother and Mario Batali joined him in making the new Italian haven a reality as the place opened for business last week. The NY Times reports that the primary goal of Eataly is to celebrate and foster understanding of the Italian table…a place where ingredients come from people with names and faces. To that end, it will include a cooking school and even an in-house travel agency that will organize trips.

Italian chef Mario Batali had this to say about Eataly “The ideology behind the restaurants is more about enticing the customer to take the ingredients home and make it themselves.” Joe Bastianich’s mom has her own expectations on the Italian Eataly as she states “We hope to transport the client into a setting that exudes Italian philosophy – the whole package of living well.” Of course, it would not be complete without some wine, as Joe Bastianich fills us in on the wine market “It’s really an encyclopedic representation of the best of Italian wines.” Make sure you stop by on your next trip to New York City and give us your review of Eataly!

Be sure to tune in next week to Masterchef on FOX on Wednesday at 8 pm EST for another 2 hours of cooking fun!
