September 16, 2010 09:49 AM by Candace Young

The fifth season of America’s Got Talent on NBC ended with a bang last night as humble, soulful singer, Michael Grimm, captured America’s hearts – and votes – and won the talent competition!  Michael receives one million dollars in prize money, the top spot on the America’s Got Talent tour, and will become a headlining act in Vegas. Read on for all of the reactions in the aftermath of Michael’s big moment…

Many people believed that powerhouse opera singer, Jackie Evancho, was a shoo-in to win America’s Got Talent,  and, in fact, both contestants seemed a little shocked to hear Michael Grimm’s name called as the winner last night!

Michael Grimm told People Magazine afterward that he figured 10 year-old Jackie had it in the bag, saying, “I was preparing my speech to leave. I couldn’t believe I heard my name. I was trying to make sure that what I thought was going on was going on, you know? This is definitely an out-of-body experience. This whole journey has been, but especially now.”

But make no mistake, Michael Grimm fully deserved the win. Piers Morgan said, “Michael’s genuine, he’s sincere, he’s very talented, he got better with every round, and [on Tuesday] night he gave the performance of his life. He’ll have a huge career. I think he’s like a young Van Morrison.”

Piers likened Jackie Evancho to Britain’s Got Talent’s Susan Boyle, saying, “Everyone assumed Susan was going to win [Britain’s Got Talent] and she finished second. Now she’s sold millions of albums. Jackie’s going to have a superstar’s career.”

Michael told the magazine tearfully, that he his grandparents (who lost their home in Hurricane Katrina) won’t have to worry about anything anymore, saying he plans to buy them a new home.  Michael also said he plans to propose to his longtime girlfriend Lucy.

Of his duet with musical heroine, Jewel, on the season finale, down-to-earth Michael shared, “She made me feel so comfortable on stage. But [at one point] she smiled at me and I almost vomited. I couldn’t believe she smiled at me that way!”
