Who is this faux-hawked bad boy dessert chef, and can Johnny Iuzzini really be as great of a judge and mentor as Tom Colicchio? Read on to find out more about the Top Chef: Just Desserts judge.
If you’re a foodie or a chef, you probably already know who Johnny Iuzzini is. But for those who don’t, he’s one of the country’s most celebrated pastry chefs. He’s the executive pastry chef at three Michelin stars restaurant Jean Georges in New York City, and won the James Beard Foundation award for â€œOutstanding Pastry Chef of the Year.â€
Iuzzini got his start at the age of 17 when he started working at The River CafÃ© in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, Johnny joined the pastry department of the original Daniel on Manhattanâ€™s Upper East Side. He later traveled Europe to learn everything he could about the fine art of cooking desserts.
In May of 2002, Chef/Owner Jean Georges Vongerichten named Johnny the Executive Pastry Chef at his famed four star name-sake, Restaurant Jean Georges, as well as its cafÃ©, Nougatine.
He’s currently a judge on Top Chef: Just Desserts. He’s also the one who “stops by the kitchen” to see how the contestants are doing. With his big hair and bigger attitude, it’s going to be a sweet, sweet season!
