There have always been a couple of semi-celebrities on the recent seasons of The Amazing Race. However, this current season seems to have more than ever.
Last season, Jordan and Jeff were former contestants on Big Brother (talk about recycling your celebrities, CBS!), and Caite was infamous for her bird-brained answer on TV as a contestant on Miss Teen USA 2007. The rest of the contestants, however, were nobodies, and that’s the way it should be.
So why does Amazing Race 17 have so many people who have already been in the public eye? Sure, maybe they are more charismatic in front of the camera, but wasn’t the race about giving ordinary people a chance to reach a dream? Not about making kinda-famous people more famous?
There are THREE beauty queens competing this season:
Mallory Ervin (above), who is racing with her dad, competed in Miss America 2010. She was the 4th runner up.
Stephanie Smith, who is competing with her hot-tempered boyfriend, Chad, was Miss South Carolina 2009.
Brooke Roberts, who is competing with friend (and watermelon lover) Claire, competed in Miss America 2005.
On top of this, Brooke and Claire are now hosts on a home shopping network, so they are used to being on TV.
Then, there’s Kevin Wu and his dad. Kevin is known as KevJumba on the internet because of his very popular YouTube videos. His comedic videos made him the number one subscribed comedian channel on YouTube in 2008.
What do you think? I say enough with the beauty queens!
