In the wake of the devastating suicides from gay teens being bullied, Lifetime’s Project Runway star Tim Gunn is speaking out and urging gay teens not to take their own lives. He recently released a video called “It Gets Better.” He should know. As a young man, Gunn also attempted suicide. Read on for more details.
Tim Gunn wasn’t always a fashion icon. As a youth, he recalls that he was living in despair and felt that suicide was the only answer.
“As a 17-year-old youth who was in quite a bit of despair, I attempted to kill myself. And I’m very happy today that attempt was unsuccessful, but at the time it was all I could contemplate,” he says. “When I woke up the next morning after taking more than 100 pills, I was in a whole other level of despair. I thought, ‘I shouldn’t be here, this isn’t what was meant to be.’ I frankly just wanted to start life all over again.”
After what Gunn says was a “a serious intervention to help,” he’s now urging teens considering suicide to seek help as well.
The video project, which Gunn worked on with writer and gay activist Dan Savage, is called “It Gets Better.” It shows teens and adults alike telling bullied kids that life does get better. And, that there is some one they can talk to, someone who cares, at the Trevor Project, a hotline for gay teens contemplating suicide.
Tim Gunn is just one of many celebrities speaking out over these devastating suicides. Chris Colfer, who plays a gay teen Glee, has also released a video for Savage’s project urging, as well as musician Ke$ha and comedian Sarah Silverman.
“I understand the desperation,” he says. “I understand the despair. And I understand how isolated you can feel. Reach out. Get help. You’re not alone. It will get better — I promise.”
