Undercover Boss: NASCAR Executive To Go Undercover

October 21, 2010 04:00 PM by Sarah_Monson

On this Sunday’s episode of Undercover Boss on CBS, Steve Phelps, NASCAR’s chief marketing officer, will be going undercover. This marks the first major league sports executive to be featured on the hit show.

In its second season, Undercover Boss is now a pretty well oiled machine. But the effort and preparation it took to pull off this Sunday’s show was nothing short of a miracle.

Phelps’s appearance on the hit show took six months of planning for CBS crews to properly infiltrate NASCAR. On the show, Phelps worked undercover with a pit crew, loaded a hauler, served concessions, and pretended to be a tire specialist.

Phelps prefers to operate outside the spotlight, but said the effort was worth it in order to shed some light on the sport.

“Steve is a humble, low-key guy not interested in a lot of publicity for himself,” said Zane Stoddard, NASCAR’s managing director, entertainment marketing and business development. “He’s usually under the radar and the perfect NASCAR executive to go under cover.”

NASCAR seemed like a perfect fit for Undercover Boss, as its popularity and diverse fan base make for a wide viewing audience.

“It’s such a huge sport, so popular and so exciting, and we knew if we could do it with NASCAR we would have an extraordinary episode,” said Stephen Lambert, an executive producer of Undercover Boss.

Just so you know, Phelps isn’t the CEO – the real NASCAR CEO and chairman is Brian France. So this marks a first for Undercover Boss as well. Still, the episode is revving up to be one of the most exciting.
