Top Chef: Just Desserts: Halloween Treat Ideas From Dannielle Kyrillos

October 29, 2010 10:00 AM by Lori Wilson

It’s trick-or-treating time and Top Chef: Just Desserts judge Dannielle Kyrillos has a few ideas to help shake up the Halloween holiday. Since she’s also a contributor to Daily Candy (a handpicked selection of all that’s fun, fashionable, food related, and culturally stimulating in the city you’re fixated on) She recently talked to ABC News in their Now You Now video segment to share her tips on making this Halloween a little more memorable.

First up in the video, Dannielle Kyrillos recommends Peanut Bruttle. No, it’s not a typo. Unlike the standard Peanut Brittle, it doesn’t use the whole nut so it won’t be as hard on your teeth and it is also dipped in chocolate. Dannielle doesn’t necessarily recommend this tasty treat for all the kids who come to your door, since they’re a little pricey, but maybe for something special like a neighborhood Halloween party.

Next, Dannielle raves about the candy shop Whimsical Candies based in Chicago. She particularly likes the Nifty Nougats, which gives Halloween lovers a little sweet, mixed with a little salty treat.

Continuing on, Dannielle goes old school and breaks out the Lemonheads for the sour candy lovers. She likes the idea of going back to the basics and reintroducing the candy that was first created in the 1950′s. She also notes they are only 25 cents a box – not a bad deal.

For something completely different, the Top Chef: Just Desserts judge offers up Spud Fudge. This twist on a classic substitutes potatoes for about a third of the sugar in a traditional fudge recipe. It comes from Sandee’s Candee’s and it makes the fudge healthier and less sweet. You can get it online at Spud Fudge, but unfortunately the creator won’t reveal her secret recipe.

Another twist on a favorite is the Panda Licorice, which can apparently be found almost everywhere. It is created by a Finish company and instead of just the standard black licorice, which many people do not like, they make cherry and raspberry flavored licorice. Panda Licorice is also made from all natural ingredients and Danielle notes the texture is perfect. Check out Panda Licorice or look on Amazon to buy it in bulk.

There’s still time to get creative and make your house a must-stop on the trick-or-treating circuit this Halloween. To check out the video go to ABC.
