Extreme Makeover Home Edition: Oregon School For the Deaf and Nightmare Factory!

October 31, 2010 06:20 PM by Candace Young

It’s time for the Halloween episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition on ABC! Ty Pennington and the design team will build a new dormitory at the Oregon School For the Deaf, as well as rebuild their fund-raising effort in the basement, which they call the Nightmare Factory. Rob Zombie helps out with the Nightmare Factory, and Marlee Matlin visits with the deaf students while they visit the Starkey Hearing Foundation during the build! Read on for all of the highlights!

Ty opens the show by saying that this week, they’re not making over a house, they’re making over a haunted house! He is surrounded by zombie volunteers! He introduces the Extreme Makeover Home Edition design team to Ed Roberts, a counselor at the Oregon School for the Deaf who designed the Nightmare Factory to help raise funds for the school. Sharla Jones speaks via video about the school being a ticking time bomb – they even had to close down part of it, and the basement, which houses the Nightmare Factory is in serious jeopardy.  Ty and the team surprise the students and faculty with a huge banner pulled by an airplane!  They tour the facilities and Ty introduces the students to Bill Austin who runs the Starkey Hearing Foundation. They learn they’re being flown up to Starkey labs to get new hearing aids this week!

As the dormitory is rebuilt from the ground up, the design team members dress up as characters from Frankenstein and enact a story narrated by Ty, which purports to tell a spooky story of a haunted Nightmare Factory. The students and staff watch on video feeds as they ride the bus to Starkey.

Michael is in charge of the Nightmare Factory, and listens as the builders explain that it was previously in danger of being closed down and has now been brought up to code. They then bring in an expert who knows a lot about horror – Rob Zombie!

He arrives in a spooky old car and tours the space to see how it can be made ‘freakier’. Michael asks Rob to take over the room with the zombie prom. Michael is totally impressed with Rob’s ideas.

Ty is working on a chandelier made of milk crates that will indicated to the students when someone is ringing the doorbell.

Meanwhile, the students are being fitted with state-of-the-art hearing aids at the Starkey Foundation – this will enable some of them to hear for the first time! Bill Austin of the foundation is there himself, and they are joined by award-winning deaf actress Marlee Matlin. One young man called Lukas hears his mom say ‘I love you’ for the first time.

Work continues on the dormitories, which are being made ‘green’, as well as Nightmare Factory, where all sorts of ghoulish designs are being constructed and brought to life.  Paige and John take the students’ parents shopping for bedding for the dorms.

Soon it’s time for the zombie volunteers to begin moving in the furniture, and before long the students and teacher are brought back to see the new dorm. The students are so excited when the bus is moved and the new building is revealed. One student remarks that the old dormitory looked like a prison! They thank the builders and then head inside!

Ty tours the dorm with them and shows them the new milk crate chandelier which has the lights connected to the doorbell. A new videophone was put in so the parents can share time with their student every night.  They have a vibration wall to enjoy the beat of music, which gets the students happily moving. The boys then go to see their rooms – they are particularly impressed by the recycled and ‘green’ items incorporated into the design.

Now, it’s time to check out the new Nightmare Factory! Ty tells everyone that horror movie director, Rob Zombie, helped out with the re-design of the place. Rob warns them if they don’t like scary, not to go inside! The first reveal is the spooky photo ops for people waiting in line.  Then, each one of the doors represents a different nightmare.

The students and teachers absolutely love it! But that’s not all – they all head to make-up to get into character and participate as their families go through! Afterward, Ty is told by Sharla that they’ve saved the school. Awesome Halloween episode!
