MTV has apologized to GLAAD for an “offensive” segment that was aired on last week’s Jersey Shore reunion special. With all that goes down on The Shore, what could have possibly been bad enough for MTV to issue an apology to the gay advocacy group? Read on to find out.
On last week’s Jersey Shore reunion special, which aired on MTV, footage of Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino flirting with an individual of whom cast members referred to as “a tranny” were shown with shots of Ronnie Ortiz-Magro in a dress. The images of Ronnie were also paired with shots of another man who was wearing a bikini and a Halloween mask.
After the footage aired, host of the reunion special, Julissa Bermudez, joked about Ronnie Ortiz-Magro’s outfit and then asked Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino: “Who was that tranny? What was up with that?”
Once word of GLAAD’s outrage over the show segment reached MTV, the cable network issued the following statement:
“We appreciate GLAAD voicing concern about the Jersey Shore reunion special. The segment in question was certainly not meant to be insensitive, but in retrospect we realize that it was offensive to some viewers. We sincerely apologize.”
Aaron McQuade, a GLAAD official, responded to MTV’s apology, telling reporters, “We appreciate the network taking responsibility for the offensive segment.”
MTV has said that they will edit the footage out of future airings of the reunion special.
This is not the first time that the Jersey Shore has been edited for content. After a preview of Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi getting punched in the face hit the Internet, MTV decided to remove the scene from the episode, citing that the footage failed to depict the full severity of the assault.
A new season of The Jersey Shore premieres in January on MTV.
