A word to contestants of Fox’s American Idol with plans to “woo” new judge, Jennifer Lopez, by singing one of her chart-topping songs: Don’t. With the audition process for the hit reality show well under way, see what Lopez has to say about the Idol hopefuls who attempt to cover one of her hits, and what she feels her role is as a judge.
Jennifer Lopez–ultra diva, pop queen, actress, entrepreneur, etc.–knows a thing or two about what it takes to make it in “the business.” And when it comes to the hundreds of contestants vying for a trip to Hollywood, hoping to increase their chances of getting through to the next round by singing one of her songs, Lopez isn’t impressed.
“It was cute, super entertaining and flattering, but no,” says Lopez.
But the new judge isn’t about insulting contestants…
“They know we’re not out to cut them down or make a joke of them,” Lopez told reporters Thursday in Los Angeles. “We’re trying to mentor them to the next step.”
Despite some apparent “duds,” Lopez says that she and fellow Idol judges, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler, have found 15 to 20 “real superstars who could be recording artists for sure.” A pop superstar herself, Lopez also adds that the judges have seen “a lot of great country [singers],” so far in the audition process.
And it sounds like she’s having a great time along the way.
“I’ve cried,” says Lopez. “We get a lot of elation when we put them through and devastation, almost, when they’re not. But it’s a ball.”
The new season of American Idol premieres in January on Fox.
