On ABC’s Skating With The Stars, figure skater Johnny Weir will be sitting at the judges’ table critiquing the six celebrities and their partners. What advice did the two-time Olympic figure skater give to the celebrity contestants taking to the ice to compete in the new reality series? Read on for all the details!
Don’t expect Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir to go easy on the six celebrities braving the ice in front of a live audience on ABC’s Skating With The Stars! “I’m not going to be soft on [the contestants],” Weir told People Magazine on Tuesday at the launch of the Kardashian sisters’ pre-paid MasterCard in New York City. “I suppose I’d be Simon Cowell, but with a lot of Paula [Abdul] underneath.”
So what’s Weir going to be looking for in the celebrity contestants’ performances?
“I’m all for the theatrics and the beauty of figure-skating, but at the same time, I’m an Olympian twice-over,” says Weir. “I’m going to judge the technique the way it should be judged.”
And when it comes to the dreaded fall on the ice (which we all know will happen–probably more than once), Johnny offers some sage advice. “The worst thing you can do is be afraid to go down, because that’s when you actually get hurt,” Weir suggests. “If you’re completely free, you’ll be fine. That’s the secret of ice skating.”
But don’t think that the whole “Paula” comparison means that Weir’s going to take pity on any celebrities that get injured during the show. The Olympian had some pretty harsh words on the topic, telling People, “The thing about skating is that you have to push through any injury. Nobody cares if you’re hurt. I’m not going to care if anyone’s hurt. I’ve had to do it. That’s what you have to do as a figure skater. So I hope that celebrities can get into that full mind set of what it is to be a figure skater and tell the world how hard it really is.”
Johnny Weir will be joined by skating commentator Dick Button at the judges’ table when Skating With The Stars premieres on November 22nd on ABC.
