Extreme Makeover Home Edition: Lighthouse School and Sweatt Family

November 14, 2010 06:56 PM by Candace Young

Tonight on ABC‘s Extreme Makeover Home Edition, country music superstars LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban, and Carrie Underwood join Ty Pennington and the design team for a very special rebuild of the Lighthouse School which was swept away on live television during the flood in May. The Sweatt family are the school administrators.  Read on for the highlights…

During the devastating flooding, The Lighthouse School actually had one of its buildings float a quarter of a mile away to the interstate.  In spite of the damage to their own facility, the Sweatt family provided shelter, food, clothing, counseling, and comfort to others. Ty Pennigton and the design team head to a pep rally where the surprised Sweatt family learns they will be on Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

The team goes to visit the school and it looks like a tornado has gone through it. They learn that the preschool suffered the worst devastation.  Ty explains that they intend to build the new preschool on higher ground. He also says that this week’s build will benefit hundreds of families.  The Sweatt family are going on a Nashville family ‘staycation’!

The Sweatt family starts their staycation by visiting the Titans at their football field. They watch Ty and some of the preschool kids discuss how the demolition should proceed. When one child suggests they drop a truck on the old school building, that’s exactly what happens!

The new preschool starts to go up – all 6500 square feet of it! Meanwhile, the Sweatt family meets LeAnn Rimes at the fair and hang out!

By Day 4, the windows are going into the school building and work has started on a huge new playground. Ty is working on a rope bridge for the play area, and explains that this is the biggest project they’ve ever undertaken.

The Sweatt family’s next stop is a recording studio. Inside, they find Keith Urban.  They share memories of the flood with him, and he plays a song for them.

During the build, Ty and the other design team members also go out and meet others in the community who were affected by the flood, and help with the clean up. Ty gives out new energy-efficient appliances too!

Back at the school, the furniture and finishing touches are going in. Ty and Paul suit up in black leather and race tricycles on the playground!

The Sweatt family is taken to the Grand Ole Opry for a special night out where Ty introduces them to Carrie Underwood backstage.  She then goes onstage and performs a very appropriate song, Temporary Home.

It’s time for the Sweatt family and teachers to see the new Lighthouse School.  They ‘move that bus’ and a lot of hugging and exclaiming ensues. The builders are thanked, and then they head inside to see the interior. Each of the teachers look at their new rooms along with some of the kids. They all love the colorful and imaginative designs and learning materials.

Ty comes in and hollers that the best part of school is recess, and then takes them out to see the playground! When it rains, Ty explains that there is also an indoor play area – they go to try it out!  Ty says, “Welcome home, Lighthouse School, welcome home!”
