TJ Lavin, the host of MTV’s Real World/Road Rules Challenge who was severely injured in the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas, has finally been released from the hospital. Keep reading for more details on Lavin’s amazing recovery.
Just a month after a bike accident put him in a Las Vegas trauma unit, TJ Lavin, the 33-year-old professional BMX biker and host of MTV’s Real World/Road Rules Challenge is back home.
“He is now walking, talking, eating on his own and is getting his sense of humor back,” TJ’s mother, Barbara “Bobbi” Lavin told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Lavin was injured during the dirt qualifying round of the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas. In addition to a fractured right wrist, he suffered an orbital fracture on his eye, and was put into a medically induced coma to reduce the swelling in his brain.
After two weeks of rehabilitation, Lavin’s mother says that they’ve still got some work ahead of them, telling the paper, “He has some eye issues and balance issues, but as the swelling goes down, we hope they will go away.”
TJ will have to wear an eye patch from time to time, and will regularly need assistance. In the coming weeks, he will join a special program for people recovering from brain injuries at an outpatient facility in Las Vegas.
But despite the long road to recovery, Lavin’s mom says that things aren’t all bad. “He’s starting to get his personality back.” She went on to report that during a recent rehab session, when he was asked to recall three historical events, TJ named the terrorist attacks on September 11th, Pearl Harbor, and “Janet Jackson’s boob,”–as in the wardrobe malfunction of the Super Bowl 2004 halftime show that caused a media frenzy.
