Extreme Makeover Home Edition: Lighthouse Christian School Opens!

November 23, 2010 10:30 AM by Candace Young

ABC‘s Extreme Makeover Home Edition did a rebuild of Lighthouse Christian School back in September, and the episode aired last week, but the school just opened for classes on November 22. Read on to find out why the school had to wait…

In September, Extreme Makeover Home Edition’s Ty Pennington and his design team surprised the Sweatt family (school administrators) and teachers of Lighthouse Christian School in Anitoch, near Nashville Tennessee, with an extreme rebuild. The preschool portion of the school had infamously floated away during the terrible floods in the area back in May of this year.  Lighthouse Christian School’s makeover was completed in a week, but the school had to wait until the episode had aired on ABC to move in and resume classes.

Teachers and students had temporarily relocated to a nearby Baptist church. Headmaster Brian Sweatt told the Tennessean that the new 6,500 square-foot facility will be life-changing for the teachers and students who will use it, saying, “We’re very, very excited. It is the state-of-the-art, finest facility around and will be an incredible benefit for our preschoolers.”

The project manager, Darryl Etheridge, also spoke to the Tennessean, telling them that more than 18,000 skilled labor man-hours went into the Extreme Makeover Home Edition build, which included four classrooms, a two-story indoor playground and which incorporated 35 brilliant colors of paint.

Design team member, Paul DiMeo explained that a lot of thought and research went into the design, saying, “We asked children’s psychologists about what kids that age would need to keep focused and have the tools they need when they go to regular school. So we try and add all these things to classrooms, different areas and environments. Say the classroom is 500 to 600 square feet. They might need an area where they can play dress-up, and an area of quiet, an area where they can eat and areas where they can learn. That’s what we tried to do: give these kids different options.”

The Lighthouse School will build phase two of the project – a building which will accommodate the two and three year-olds. Construction is expected to commence in the next month or two.
