The Real World: Why We’ll Never See a ‘Real World Louisville’

No, you’re not having a really bad case of deja vu; the cast of MTV’s The Real World is once again filming in Las Vegas for its 25th anniversary season. But if you’re a fan who has already watched the “seven strangers” go back to places like New York and New Orleans, you too are probably wondering why MTV is recycling locations for the show. Aren’t there enough cities in the country with bars and strip clubs for the roommates to take over?

After executive producer of MTV’s The Real World, Jonathan Murray announced that the show was returning to Las Vegas for its 25th season, the question on everyone’s mind was: Why?

True, there’s probably no better place to watch a cast that reportedly includes a gay porn star run amuck, but c’mon–Vegas again?!

In a recent interview, Jonathan Murray shed a little light on the matter for fans.

“Vegas, L.A., maybe San Diego, Miami, New York– these are the cities that young people dream about living in,” Murray explained. “The show has always had a fantasy appeal to it.”

In other words–don’t hold your breath for a ‘Real World Deluth,’ or a ‘Real World Louisville.’

“As great a city as Louisville might be, I don’t know whether it meets everybody’s need as a fantasy city,” said Murray. “It might be a fantasy city if you live in the 400-mile range around Louisville. And there are great cities that are amazing, but they don’t have that national reputation.”

Murray also notes that there were times when producers “certainly tried to buck that” tradition, by taking the show to cities like Philadelphia, which according to him “certainly wasn’t at that time on people’s lists.”

Still, over the years, the location of the show has pretty much come down to one thing: Whatever city the producers choose, it “has to be a big enough city so we can get lost in it,” without the show being “big news. …When you’re in a large city like New York or Los Angeles or even a city like New Orleans or Las Vegas…people aren’t so focused on you; it’s good not to have people lining up in front of the house to see what’s going on.”

Hmm. Makes sense.

Hmmm…okay, if you don’t want people lining up outside of the house, why not cnacel the show?
    Just an idea.

Well that doesn’t make sense to cancel a show if it is successful. That’s like shutting down a business that’s successful. That would be dumb. However, if you are in a small town or city that no one dreams of going to, it would A. Disrupt production from the whole town taking pics outside the house B. No one would care to watch it in a small town or city. Fantasy like Jon says. I understand, you were just speaking out of your frustration with the show, but realistically that wouldn’t be a good business decision.

Don’t hold your breathe for Louisville? Granted I was not raised here and haven’t been here long but I love this city. And not big enough? Are you joking Louisville hosts one of the biggest celebrity outings and sporting event yearly. It’s called the Kentucky derby and it’s every year. Known for the biggest parties of the year. Some of the cities they’ve done I’m like really?
