Padma Lakshmi may be busy promoting the upcoming premiere of Top Chef: All-Stars on Bravo (we know–we can hardly wait either!), but she still has time to devote to issues she cares about, like fighting childhood obesity. How’s the Top Chef host getting involved? Keep reading for all the details.
Bravo’s hit reality show, Top Chef: All-Stars, is gearing up for it’s eighth season, and while the “cheftestants” are preparing to throw down in the kitchen, host Padma Lakshmi is getting ready for a fight of her own: a fight against childhood obesity.
The number of kids in the United States that are affected by childhood obesity has tripled in the last three decades, and as a result, these children will be at risk for a variety of health problems, like diabetes and heart disease.
Lakshmi has volunteered to lend her expertise (and fame) to the cause and is petitioning Congress to get behind The Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act (H.R. 5504), which would help schools serve more healthy foods to students, like fruits, vegetables, and low-fat plant-based meal options.
What inspired Padma to get involved in the effort to prevent childhood obesity?
“Being a new mother and cookbook author, I am very passionate about creating nutritious and delicious meals for fans, friends, and family. I’m writing to ask for your help in creating the same opportunities for America’s children…,” Lakshmi writes in a letter to Nancy Pelosi. “This will help students form healthy habits and will also help prevent childhood obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and even heart disease later in life.”
Way to go Padma for being a champion for such a worthy cause!
Top Chef: All-Stars premieres December 1 on Bravo.
