Danny Gokey of Fox’s American Idol has a lot going on these days, like the release of his first holiday single, a cover of Amy Grant’s hit, “Tennessee Christmas.” But why did the Milwaukee native decide to do a song about Tennessee?
“I love Amy Grant’s version of ‘Tennessee Christmas,’” says Danny. “By recording the song, I wanted to add my own soulful country touch to this wonderful classic.”
In addition to recording his first holiday album, Danny recently co-hosted the online red carpet broadcast for the American Music Awards, where fellow Idol alum, Carrie Underwood, took home her sixth AMA trophy.
And Gokey’s hoping to take home some hardware of his own soon… Danny is one of the nominees for “Artist of the Year: Breakthrough Artist” in Fox’s American Country Awards. Should Gokey win as “Artist of the Year” during the ACAs, he’ll make history as the first ever recipient of the award. Both Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler are also nominated for ACAs.
Whether he wins the award or not, Danny Gokey’s name is already etched in music history. This past March, his debut album, My Best Days, set digital sales records. Danny had the best first-week sales of any debut male country artist in 18 years.
And though he’s come a long way since his days on American Idol, Danny still takes time to cheer on other Idol hopefuls. He was recently on hand to help pump up the crowd at American Idol’s Season 10 auditions in Milwaukee.
Danny’s version of “Tennessee Christmas” is now available to purchase as a digital single.
The American Country Awards will air December 6 on Fox.
The season premiere of American Idol airs Wednesday, January 19 on Fox.
