Skating With the Stars premiered this week following the finale of the popular ABC reality show Dancing With the Stars. The new show follows the same format – celebrities are paired with professionals to learn a new skill and are judged by a panel of experts – but will it be as big a hit as its predecessor?
On the surface, the only difference between Skating With the Stars and Dancing With the Stars is that the celebrities are taking on figure skating instead of ballroom dancing. The celebrities Sean Young, Rebecca Budig, Jonny Moseley, Vince Neil, Bethenny Frankel and Brandon Mychal Smith may also be a little less recognizable than the ones on Dancing With the Stars, but are they enough to bring in the viewers?
According to Entertainment Weekly online, Skating With the Stars‘ premiere didn’t have the most encouraging numbers. After an average of 22.5 million television viewers watched Jennifer Grey take home the mirror ball trophy on Dancing With the Stars, many of them tuned out when the camera panned from the ballroom to the ice rink. Skating With the Stars began around 9:15 pm with 19.4 million viewers and steadily declined every half hour ending up with 6 million viewers by 10:30 pm. Put another way, the new ABC reality show posted a 2.7/7, down 7 percent from Find My Family, which aired last year at the same time.
Entertainment Weekly hasn’t written Skating With the Stars off though, suggesting, “The franchise has potential; if only they’d lose the color commentary and have Len Goodman school Dick Button on how to be a great senior — and sassy — judge.”
What do you think? Does Skating With the Stars have what it takes to rival Dancing With the Stars, or even just continue on for a second season?
