Crystal Bowersox, runner-up of Fox’s American Idol, just announced the release date for her debut album, Farmer’s Daughter. On the set of her music video, Crystal reveals why she chose such a personal song as her first single, what her mother thinks about it, and how the song has helped her forgive.
After much anticipation, Farmer’s Daughter, Crystal’s debut album, will be released on December 14th.
“It’s between country and rock and roll,” Crystal said in an interview with her hometown Fox station. “Some of the songs are really country, but, like, old-school country. Not new pop-country,” says Bowersox. “Then some of the songs are throwback to retro funk and soul. There’s a lot of different flavors there. You can definitely hear all of my influences and the music that’s been important to me in my life.”
So with such an eclectic mix of songs to choose from, why did Crystal pick “Farmer’s Daughter” as her first single?
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Crystal reveals that the song, which she wrote before her American Idol days, was more personal to her than the others on the album, and it was important to her to have her first single be an intimate one.
“It’s an angry song to my mom, but she knows I love her,” says Bowersox.
The video for “Farmer’s Daughter”–Crystal’s first ever–depicts the healing process that she went through with her mother, growing up in a home with physical abuse, reaching the point where she is now–a mother herself–and able to forgive.
Though she admits that her mother wasn’t (and still isn’t) very happy that she chose to use the song, Crystal says that “Farmer’s Daughter” helped her to deal with all of her emotions, and that despite her troubled childhood, she’s “learned through example, good and bad,” how to be the kind of mom she wants to be.
The season premiere of American Idol airs Wednesday, January 19 on Fox.
