Extreme Makeover Home Edition: Gaston Family and Mariah Carey!

December 12, 2010 06:57 PM by Candace Young

Talented and charismatic Finis Gaston took in his sister’s children after she was in a terrible accident.  The cheerleading star sacrificed his own scholarship to go to work and provide for the kids, and gives back to the community by volunteering with a cheerleading squad in Baker, Florida.  Ty Pennington and the design team showed up at his job to let him know the family would be receiving an Extreme Makeover Home Edition home makeover. Read on to find out how superstar Mariah Carey fits in…

The Extreme Makeover Home Edition team, Finis Gaston, and his family go out to the field where he does his coaching. Ty opens up the bus and out comes Finis Gaston’s favorite celebrity, Mariah Carey! They all get on the bus and travel to the Gaston home.

Once onsite, Ty realizes that the rental they are living in has a crumbling foundation – but the Gaston family doesn’t actually own it, so EMHE can’t tear it down.

Mariah and the design team learn more about the family and develop ideas by speaking to them at the rental house. Ty speaks to Finis about what his coaching means to him, and about the family members he has lost, including his mother. It was after her death that he made the move to get guardianship of his nieces and nephews.

Ty wants to give the Gaston family a very special Christmas gift this year. Mariah learns that Finis wants to finish his schooling – she says her goal is to make Christmas wonderful for them.   Ty sends the family to Walt Disney World on vacation.

The first thing the Extreme Makeover Home Edition team has to do is find some land to build on. Ty gets in touch with the family to tell them that Escambia County has donated land. He reads them his version of Extreme Makeover Home Edition Night Before Christmas.

The house begins to go up and the design team splits up the workload. Ty wants to go all out since the family is coming home for Christmas. Mariah tells the team she’s heading to New York, but will be back in a couple of days.

As the house comes together, Ty gets in touch with Finis and family at Disney World again and they are introduced to Dominique Dawes – an Olympic gymnast who was very inspirational to a young Finis. He is thrilled and becomes emotional. They do some gymnastic moves together in the ESPN Wide World of Sports building.

Michael gets a gang of elves to help him courtesy of Mariah Carey. The interior of the house is coming together. Tracy is putting a life-size poem on one bedroom wall, and Ty is working on some custom art for Finis’s master bedroom. Johnny has devised a glass projector wall to separate two of the boys’ rooms. When Tracy and Michael go shopping they are followed by carolers.  Soon, it’s time to move in the furniture!

They bring the family back early to give Finis Gaston an early Christmas gift at a gym. The people who run the gym announce to Finis that when he’s settled, there is a place there for him to come and coach gymnastics. He dons his new coaching shirt.

The next day, the Gaston family arrive at their new home in a white limo in a Christmas parade! Mariah has returned for the unveiling. The crowd chants, “Move that bus!”  The beautiful new home is revealed – fully decorated for Christmas. Finis thanks the builders from Heritage Homes and is presented with the deed to his own home and a home maintenance fund of over $50,000!

Finis cries as he takes in the interior of the home.  Ty comes in and says Sears donated gift cards so they can buy presents this year. Mariah talks to Finis about the wall of photos which was her idea.  The kids take in their new bedrooms – the Tron-themed room is connected to the Florida football-themed room by the glass projector wall.

Finis’s niece sees the life-sized poem on her new bedroom wall, and Finish himself takes in his new space complete with ensuite bath. It’s decorated with vintage gymnastics and cheer memorabilia. Last, they are taken outside where Ty has arranged for some Christmas snow in Florida! Mariah tells Finis that the University of Western Florida is offering a scholarship for him to finish his education – his whole family can also go to school!   Ty welcomes the Gaston family home.
