After last week’s shocking elimination of Jen Carroll, some of the cheftestants are pointing fingers at Jaime, who left the kitchen to get all of two stitches when she cut her finger during the Elimination Challenge.
But the blame game comes to an end when they walk into the kitchen for this week’s Quickfire Challenge and see Padma Lakshmi with Chef David Chang.
The chefs are randomly split into four teams of four and given the instructions for the challenge. Not only does each team need to quickly work together to prep the ingredients for a dish, but they have to prep them to Chef Chang’s strict standards. The team that finishes their prep-work first will then rush to push a button to start a clock, which will let everyone know how much time they have remaining.
Padma lets the teams know that though no immunity will be awarded for the challenge, the team members of the winning team will each win $5,000.
The teams rush to prep their ingredients, which includes practically a bucket of chopped garlic and lamb. Two of the teams tried to limit the amount of time they needed to actually cook their dishes by choosing to make Lamb Carpaccio, since the lamb wouldn’t have to be cooked at all.
Though Antonio’s team finished first, their Lamb with Tandoori Spiced Yogurt was among one of the worst. And the winner of the Quickfire Challenge was Spike, Tre, Stephen and Richard’s team’s Crispy Lamb Chop with Artichoke 3 Ways.
For the Elimination Challenge, each group is sent to dine at one of New York’s finest restaurants and challenged to create and prepare a dish that the chef would want to add to their menu.
The chefs choose knives to select their restaurants, and then Padma Lakshmi lets them know that not only will their teammates be their competition during the challenge, but that two chefs will be eliminated tonight.
After leaving the Top Chef kitchen, the contestants head to their restaurants, and once they get a taste of the type of food they need to prepare, some of them are worried about whether or not they’ll be able to create a dish so different from their own style.
The judges go from restaurant to restaurant with the owners serving as the guest judge for their own establishments. During the judging, Anthony Bourdain admits that even he wouldn’t want to be tasked with this challenge.Â
After the challenge, Dale T., Angelo, Antonia, and Tre are called to Judges’ Table first and are told that they have the four favorite dishes of the challenge. The winner of the challenge, Dale received a trip to New Zealand for his Sunny Side Up Egg Dumpling, Braised Pork Belly, Milk Ramen with Bacon, Beef & Pork.
Next, Tiffani F., Fabio, Dale L., and Stephen are called before the judges, and the other chefs warn them not to “pull a Jen.” Anthony Bourdain is much nicer to Fabio this time around. He’s actually a lot nicer about everyone’s dishes–not sure if we like the cuddly, restrained Bourdain, but nonetheless, he and the other judges came to a conclusion.
In the end, both Stephen and Dale L. were asked to pack their knives and leave the competition.
