They’re at it again! Yet another big change for Season 10 of American Idol has been announced. This year, the top 40 contestants of the FOX reality show will return to Hollywood for a chance to make it to the finals in a round called, “Sing For Your Life.” Keep reading for all the details!
It’s still not clear just how many contestants will be a part of the newly added “Sing For Your Life” round on American Idol, but Idol insiders have guessed that it could be anywhere between 12 and 20 individuals.
During the round, which will take place in Hollywood, contestants will have the opportunity to either sing an American Idol-approved song, pick another song–hoping that it’s approved by the show, or sing an original song.
The contestant must perform their chosen song without a band or back-up singers, but they are permitted to have the accompaniment of one instrument if they choose not to do it a capella. The instrument can be played by the contestant themselves, OR, they can opt to have someone chosen by the producers play as they perform.
The “Sing For Your Life” round is one of many changes being made in this season of American Idol in attempt to boost the show’s ratings, which have been sagging for two seasons (though they’re still the number one show on TV).
Those changes also include the addition of new “in-house mentor,” Jimmy Iovine, who has been working closely with contestants to help them improve their performances.
The season premiere of American Idol airs Wednesday, January 19 at 8|7c on FOX.
