Who says you can’t learn anything from reality TV? Lost Portland teen Jake Denham’s reality TV fandom helped him survive nine grueling hours in below zero temperatures, reports Time. Read more on how his favorite Discovery shows, Man vs. Wild and Survivorman, saved his life…
According to Time, 14-year-old Denham was skiing in Oregon’s Mount Bachelor New Year’s Eve when he lost one of his ski’s on the slope and became separated from his family. He took off one ski and started walking down the mountain.
Denham realized he couldn’t make it back by daylight when the weather got worse and told ABC when he saw the stars and Venus he decided to utilize some tips from the survival shows he’d been watching.
“I dug a canal, and it went up a hill, so the wind would blow over it so the wind wouldn’t hit me,” Denham said.
According to The Daily Mail, Denham learned the survival tip watching host Bear Grylls on Man vs. Wild. The show depicts Grylls’ efforts to make his way back to civilization after being left stranded in various regions. Denham copied the British adventurer’s strategies to survive the night. He used another Grylls tip to find his way back down the mountain and out of the woods.
“I went down and then when I got lost, I got down on my hands and knees and followed the trail again,” he told Time. “I walked down, and then I saw lights.”
Denham made it back safely. Time reports the successful rescue amazed Denham’s mother who said, “What was incredible is that Jake got out in perfect condition”–all thanks to reality TV, according to her son.
