The show was marketed as a tour of America’s northernmost state through the eyes of former vice presidential running mate and governor of Alaska. It focused on her adventures with family.
Memorable episodes featured a train wreck joint camping trip with TLC’s other star mom, Kate Gosselin, and her kids as well as a highly controversial caribou hunt.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the show had good ratings, averaging 3.2 million viewers.
Insiders told Entertainment Weekly Palin enjoyed filming the show more than she expected, but not shooting another season makes sense if Palin decides to run for office as people would interpret the second season as a sign she did not want to run.
USA Today reports Alaskan tourism officials are hoping one season will be enough to bring in some vacationers.
Kathy Dunn, marketing director for The Alaska Travel Industry Association, told the Associated Press “Obviously, any time you put Alaska in front of people, no matter the context, it’s a good thing. Exposure is always good.”
The travel association has just released marketing ads which will air on “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” according to USA Today.
Palin told USA Today in a previous interview the show was not meant to be “Housewives of Alaska,” but feature “the uniqueness of Alaska, the special place it is,…showing the rest of America why we are here and what we have to offer.”
The show premiered in November and ran for eight episodes. TLC will air the last episode, a 2-hour season finale, tonight at 8/7 c.
