Jackson tells PopEater contestants say he’s the “mean judge” this season, a role Cowell perfected during his “Idol” years before leaving the show for the U.S. version of hit U.K. singing competition “The X Factor” this year.
“Simon is irreplaceable,” Jackson says, “but people will be surprised to see that I’m very assertive this season.”
The new attitude will come as a surprise to “Idol” fans who’ve come to know Jackson for his chill, relaxed demeanor.
PopEater says Jackson has “seen it all” and just wants to find someone that’s original and has the “raw talent” to last a while in the entertainment industry.
He’ll be rooting for contestants he thinks meet that description. Jackson says you can expect some bickering at the “Idol” judging table because of the judges’ strong opinions on certain contestants.
“When you’re passionate about a singer, you want them to succeed. Sometimes you’re really pulling for someone, and another judge just doesn’t get it,” he tells PopEater.
Jackson says he’s had several on-set disagreements with Steven Tyler over certain contestants.
While Jackson admits the new judges bicker occassionally, he says the new panel of judges, which includes Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, has “instant chemistry.”
Jackson tells PopEater he’s optimistic about the new season, which he likes to refer to as “Season 10: The Remix.”
The revamped “American Idol” will return next week on Fox.
