Extreme Makeover Home Edition: Leigh Anne Tuohy To Be Keynote Speaker at El Paso YWCA

January 19, 2011 12:30 PM by Candace Young

Extreme Makeover Home Edition‘s newest design team member, Leigh Anne Tuohy, will be headed to El Paso, Texas this Spring to share her inspirational story at the 18th Annual YWCA Women’s Benefit Luncheon.  Read on to find out more…

Before Leigh Anne Tuohy joined Ty Pennington and the other Extreme Makeover Home Edition design team members in helping to change the lives of deserving families, she was known for being the real-life mom whose actions inspired the movie, The Blind Side. Now, Leigh Anne has been asked to share that story at the YWCA Women’s Benefit coming up in April in El Paso, Texas.

Sue Darnell, president-elect of the board of directors of the YWCA told the El Paso Times, “We are really excited to have her come to speak. Because of the movie and her great story, she is somebody that will bring a lot to El Paso and will be of great interest to El Pasoans.”

Of course, Leigh Anne’s inspirational story is that she and her husband Sean took in sixteen-year old teenager Michael Oher after realizing he was homeless. They legally adopted Michael in 2008, after which he went on to win a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi. Today, Michael is an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens.

This story was told in the movie, The Blind Side, in which actress Sandra Bullock played Leigh Anne and won an Academy Award for her performance.

Why was Leigh Anne chosen as keynote speaker? Sue Darnell told the El Paso Times, “One of the hallmark programs of the Y is helping the homeless through our Transitional Living Center, and obviously she has done that in a personal level with her son Michael.  She has a lot to offer the city through her own experiences with helping homeless people and the joys and benefits that could bring.”

The YWCA hopes Leigh Anne’s story will prove inspirational for those in the audience.  All money raised will support programs that help children and/or families in transition in the El Paso area.

We are so excited about Leigh Anne’s visit to El Paso. The Women’s Benefit Event is the major fundraiser for our YWCA–the largest most comprehensive in the nation, touching and impacting more than 100,000 lives annually! Thanks for the support!

Leigh Anne’s visit to El Paso will surely be a success–but, Candace (author of the article), are you sure that Michael isn’t a pitcher for the Baltimore Ravens? Or maybe a kicker for the New York Yankees? :)

Tye you are my hero. My daughter and her husband earn a very low end salary. They are trying to fix a house that they bought. I have concerns. The home is 100 years old and is very nice now. The windows all need to be replaced as well as steps to the second floor to make these steps to code. If a fire would start they could potentially be trapprd in the upstairs. They are good people and help everyone. Someday they will be taking care of both my husband and my son in law’s mother. They are hoping to have a large family. My son in law is a wonderful man but he can use some help in finishing the repairs to the house. Did I mention that his basement is dirt walls and dirt floor without an entrance to get there from inside the house. Would you be willing to draw up plains to either renovate their house or mine so that they can have a better start in life. The best of the best is that they are deeply in love with each other.
